<\/p>\nEleven people are out of their homes after a fire broke out in the basement of a detached home early Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Firefighters were called to the 2900 block of East Georgia Street around 5:45 a.m.<\/p>\n
Matthew Trudeau with Vancouver Fire<\/a> and Rescue Services said an e-bike battery charging in the basement caused the fire.<\/p>\n Everyone was able to get out of the house safely, but two people were injured and taken to the hospital in stable condition, Trudeau said.<\/p>\n \u201cFire investigators went there, observed multiple e-bikes on the property and multiple batteries being charged inside,\u201d Trudeau said.<\/p>\n \u201cAt least one of them failing and causing fire to rapidly to grow and expand inside this area, causing other material to catch fire.\u201d<\/p>\n Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t1:55 Chanel Carson, a neighbour, heard a loud rumbling and the sound of breaking glass around 5:40 a.m.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t \t\t\t\t\tGet breaking National news<\/p>\n For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was just \u2026 so much smoke everywhere,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \u201cEverybody had just called the fire department and they were on their way.\u201d<\/p>\n Carson said it was terrifying to see the flames and smoke.<\/p>\n \u201cMany of the residents who live there are delivery drivers and they use e-bikes to make deliveries, so that\u2019s really unfortunate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t2:13 \n\t\tTrending Now\n\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\tCountry singers Zach Bryan, Gavin Adcock face off in music fest altercation\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/li>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t \n\t\t\t\t\tAlleged Charlie Kirk killer not co-operating with police, Utah governor says\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Trudeau said when e-bike batteries are maintained and handled correctly, they are safe.<\/p>\n Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n However, when someone modifies a battery or buys an aftermarket one, that is when they can fail and catch fire.<\/p>\n \u201cThe risk of danger is there when they do fail and they do fail sometimes quite spectacularly,\u201d Trudeau added.<\/p>\n He stressed that people should only replace the batteries with the correct unit from the manufacturer and should not modify the battery in any way.
