ARLINGTON, Texas \u2014 The instruments we choose often reflect who we are \u2014 and for Michael Gonzalez and Cindy Cabrera, those instruments brought them together in more ways than one.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez, who plays the bass, and Cabrera, the violin, lead Mariachi De Los Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field. Their musical roles are as distinct as their personalities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe violin is very loud and out there,\u201d Gonzalez says in a rehearsal.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s very level-headed, he\u2019s very grounding,\u201d Cabrera adds \u2014 a perfect harmony of opposites.<\/p>\n
Their story began seven years ago at a party.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were both mariachis and didn\u2019t even know it,\u201d they recall.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That night sparked a connection that\u2019s been growing ever since.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was gorgeous, very gorgeous. Her smile, very gorgeous,\u201d Gonzalez recalls with a smile.<\/p>\n
Though their instruments don\u2019t \u201creally coincide with each other,\u201d as they put it, their hearts do. Every Mariachi Monday, they play side by side, embodying both the heartbeat and melody of the band.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing the heartbeat of the mariachi and the melody of the mariachi \u2014 they’re two very important instruments for the band,\u201d they explain.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, Michael made their duet official with a mariachi-style proposal.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI loved it. It is what I would have wanted,\u201d Cabrera said.<\/p>\n
While the wedding date is still undecided, one detail is set in stone: A Mariachi-themed wedding.<\/p>\n
As they continue to play together, these solos have turned into a lifelong serenade.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cUltimately, it\u2019s music, right?\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cWe were able to find a song to make it work.\u201d<\/p>\n
