{"id":231250,"date":"2025-09-16T11:37:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T11:37:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/231250\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T11:37:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T11:37:15","slug":"kissing-bug-chagas-disease-is-now-endemic-to-the-us-scientists-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/231250\/","title":{"rendered":"Kissing bug: Chagas disease is now endemic to the US, scientists say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                Facebook<\/p>\n<p>                Tweet<\/p>\n<p>        <a class=\"social-share_labelled-list__share\" href=\"mailto:?subject=CNN%20content%20share&amp;body=Check%20out%20this%20article%3A%0Ahttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2025%2F09%2F16%2Fhealth%2Fkissing-bug-chagas-endemic-us\" data-type=\"email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"share with email\" title=\"Share with email\"><\/p>\n<p>                Email<br \/>\n        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>                Link<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsmuk000t2cqha3fx8wzk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chagas disease, a potentially deadly condition caused by a parasite carried by insects called kissing bugs, should now be considered endemic in the United States, experts say \u2013 and without recognition that it\u2019s a constant presence in some parts of the country, more people will suffer unnecessarily.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt60002336nkea8aeh9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/31\/9\/24-1700_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A report<\/a> on the topic was published last week in the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the authors say they hope that growing global attention on the new paper means Chagas could finally get the surveillance, prevention and testing efforts and research funding it deserves in the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt60004336nqxxclofm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve been waiting forever; all of us Chagas people have been waiting for people to recognize this disease is in our communities,\u201d said Dr. Norman Beatty, coauthor of the report and <a href=\"https:\/\/id.medicine.ufl.edu\/profile\/beatty-norman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a clinical associate professor<\/a> at the University of Florida College of Medicine\u2019s Division of Infectious Diseases &amp; Global Medicine who has studied Chagas for the past decade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt60005336n240rslsr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/chagas-disease-(american-trypanosomiasis)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a> considers Chagas a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paho.org\/en\/topics\/chagas-disease#:~:text=Chagas%20disease%20is%20a%20parasitic,of%20America%20and%20the%20world.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">neglected tropical disease<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paho.org\/en\/topics\/chagas-disease#:~:text=Chagas%20disease%20is%20a%20parasitic,of%20America%20and%20the%20world.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the Pan American Health Organization<\/a> says it is endemic \u2013 with a constant presence or usual prevalence \u2013 in 21 other countries in the Americas, not including the United States. Chagas is one of the leading causes of heart disease in Latin America, and it causes more disability than other insect-borne infections, even more than malaria and Zika, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40475-019-0170-1#ref-CR1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">studies show<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt60006336nucdkiiww@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chagas largely spreads when triatomine bugs, commonly known as kissing bugs, bite a human while they\u2019re sleeping. The bug defecates in that bite or on a person\u2019s face, and the person unwittingly wipes the feces into their eyes, nose or mouth. The feces can carry a parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, that causes the disease.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflo942g00053b6qyfuto9p0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Chagas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/chagas-disease-(american-trypanosomiasis)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">can also spread<\/a> through contaminated food or blood, organ transplants and pregnancy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt60007336nnwrt5n09@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Early symptoms can include fever, body aches, headaches, rash, vomiting and tiredness. They may last weeks or even months after initial infection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt6000a336n46075m90@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to the CDC, about 20% to 30% of people who\u2019ve been infected develop more serious problems like long-term digestive and nervous system conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIR.0000000000000599#:~:text=Background:,suspected%20or%20confirmed%20Chagas%20disease.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">heart failure<\/a>, stroke or death.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt60008336n3bzcz2jk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If it\u2019s caught early, the disease can be cured with benznidazole or nifurtimox, medicines that kill the parasite. But the drugs become less effective the longer a person has been infected, and most people remain unaware of the disease. Many doctors don\u2019t think to look for it in patients in the US, the new report noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflobcrr000a3b6qldijporx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In fact, some people who are infected find out some time later, when they donate blood, since the US has been testing its blood supply for Chagas since 2007.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt6000b336n9zq95kqm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Surveillance is limited, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chagas\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the CDC estimates<\/a> that about 280,000 people in the US have Chagas at any given time. It\u2019s unclear how many have the more serious form of the disease or how many deaths are caused by Chagas each year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt6000c336n8tl8gjl3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists have found kissing bugs in 32 states, the new report says. The blood-sucking insect mostly lives in warmer Southern states, but with climate change causing more bug-friendly temperatures, there\u2019s a good chance they have spread farther.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt7000d336n8wqdxrky@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientistst have identified at least 17 states with infected mammals, including Virginia opossums, raccoons, banded armadillos, striped skunks, coyotes and wood rats, according to the latest report. Veterinarians have seen infections in zoo animals and pets, including cats, dogs and a horse.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt7000e336nte0v7otw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Doctors have reported Chagas cases in humans in eight states: Arkansas, Arizona, California, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. There are probably more cases, the new report says, but doctors are not required to report Chagas infections in most states.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsotx0000336nf9fpwfl0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It would be \u201cmomentous\u201d for Chagas to be declared endemic in the US, said Dr. Mario J. Grijalva, director of the Infectious and Tropical Disease Institute and professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Ohio University.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflskphj000q3b6qkmgkpfnh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen you consider it a problem that belongs to others, it\u2019s not important. But when it\u2019s a problem affecting people here, the recognition that it is an endemic disease in the United States is a game-changer, at least in terms of the public policy possibilities and the awareness that is required to properly address this complicated issue,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfls921l001i336nhzfm5nrs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Grijalva knows firsthand what a difference it can make to have awareness and a concerted health campaign. He spent his recent sabbatical riding a motorcycle across Latin America to spread the word about the condition, after making a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RBwYpF14vNs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">similar motorcycle trip in the US<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflsmh5k000s3b6qdo9se4is@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In countries like Ecuador and Peru where Chagas is endemic but there is no concerted government efforts to manage it, most people were unaware of the disease, Grijalva said. But in Chile, Bolivia and Argentina &#8211; all countries with robust health and public awareness campaigns \u2013 the people he spoke with knew about Chagas, and many cases were being well-managed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflsoet4000x3b6q7rwyeqhi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere has been a lot of effort to fight this in those countries,\u201d Grijalva said. \u201cIt can be fought, and there are a lot of successes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt7000f336n1rdp5igo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beatty hopes broader recognition of Chagas in the US will prompt officials to step up surveillance efforts like what he\u2019s seen in some other countries. He also hopes health care providers learn to recognize cases sooner and wishes the US would work to protect people from kissing bugs like it does mosquitoes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt7000g336njp70r42p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have mosquito control programs around the country, but we\u2019re essentially doing nothing about kissing bugs,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt7000h336ng94jpj19@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the meantime, he said, people aiming to keep the insects away can better seal their homes, use window screens and spray for bugs. However, he has not found any particular spray specifically approved to target kissing bugs in the US.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt7000i336nrqasd7bs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And in Florida, where he works and where about 30% of kissing bugs seem to be positive for the parasites, Beatty said, people will often send him bug photos or even drop the insects off at his hospital to be tested.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt7000j336nx5zhim7x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey\u2019re scared,\u201d he said \u2013 and they have a right to be.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmflnsrt7000k336np8egbvwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beatty said he tries to help his community as best he can. \u201cThere\u2019s not another doctor around here walking around with bugs in their pockets,\u201d he said.
