Sources familiar with Microsoft\u2019s developer plans tell me that the company has been instructing its own developers to use Claude Sonnet 4 in recent months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cBased on internal benchmarks, Claude Sonnet 4 is our recommended model for GitHub Copilot,\u201d said Julia Liuson, head of Microsoft\u2019s developer division, in an internal email in June. While that guidance was issued ahead of the GPT-5 release, I understand Microsoft\u2019s model guidance hasn\u2019t changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Microsoft is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/report\/776853\/microsoft-ai-training-capacity-investments-in-house-models\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">making \u201csignificant investments\u201d in training<\/a> its own AI models. \u201cWe\u2019re also going to be making significant investments in our own cluster. So today, MAI-1-preview was only trained on 15,000 H100s, a tiny cluster in the grand scheme of things,\u201d said Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman, in an employee-only town hall last week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Microsoft is also reportedly planning to use Anthropic\u2019s AI models for some features in its Microsoft 365 apps soon. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theinformation.com\/articles\/microsoft-buy-ai-anthropic-shift-openai?rc=r6gev9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Information<\/a> reports that the Microsoft 365 Copilot will be \u201cpartly powered by Anthropic models,\u201d after Microsoft found that some of these models outperformed OpenAI in Excel and PowerPoint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">OpenAI and Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/776884\/openai-microsoft-mou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced a new deal<\/a> last week that could clear the way for the AI startup\u2019s initial public offering. Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/7\/22\/20703578\/microsoft-openai-investment-partnership-1-billion-azure-artificial-general-intelligence-agi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">since 2019<\/a>, and has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/notepad-microsoft-newsletter\/688964\/microsoft-openai-relationship-notepad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complex revenue sharing agreement<\/a> in place.
