Fifteen cameras will be installed along Broad Street<\/a> and Old York Road to cover the full corridor. Broad Street is posted at 25 mph for most of its length, with only slight variations near the stadium complex. The precedent is clear.<\/p>\n On Roosevelt Boulevard<\/b>, once the most dangerous road in the city, ASE cameras have made a dramatic impact<\/a> since their installation in 2020:<\/p>\n In sharp contrast, since the pilot on Roosevelt went in, Broad Street has become more dangerous.\u00a0<\/p>\n Between 2018 and 2022, Route 611 experienced:<\/p>\n Broad Street encourages speeding by design, making it one of the most dangerous streets in Philadelphia and a big player in the city\u2019s High Injury Network<\/b><\/a>. Each tragedy \u2014 each life lost \u2014 underscores the urgency of this intervention.<\/p>\n Speed cameras are an effective tool, but they are not a silver bullet. Philadelphia\u2019s streets need to be re\u2010engineered to truly prioritize the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and all road users. And not just in Center City \u2014 every neighborhood deserves streets designed for safety. Street redesigns cost money and take time. So until the city can secure the resources to make these large\u2010scale changes, automated enforcement is a proven way to save lives right now.<\/p>\n Additionally, we believe automated enforcement is a better option than police enforcement. Cameras cannot discriminate, and cut down on potential negative interactions between law enforcement and citizens. We wrote more about that issue on our Vision Zero Equity Statement, which you can read here.<\/a><\/p>\n ASE isn\u2019t about raising revenue. The goal is to change driver behavior and save lives. But it\u2019s important to note that revenue from ASE tickets does not flow into a general city fund. Instead, it goes into a transportation safety fund administered by PennDOT. Those dollars are earmarked for local safety projects, especially near where the violations are recorded.\u00a0<\/p>\n Years of Advocacy<\/b><\/p>\n The Bicycle Coalition has fought for ASE for years, and we\u2019re proud to see it expanding beyond Roosevelt Boulevard.
