1.\u00a0Trump forms federal board to prevent LIRR strike<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

President Donald Trump has issued an\u00a0executive order\u00a0to create a Presidential Emergency Board meant to resolve a contract dispute that nearly\u00a0triggered a strike\u00a0on the Long Island Rail Road this week.<\/p>\n

The LIRR Bargaining Coalition on Monday voted to authorize a strike, but also approved seeking federal intervention. The move pushed the possibility of a strike at least into January.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0New York judge tosses terrorism charges against Luigi Mangione, lets murder count stand<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

A New York judge today threw out terrorism charges against\u00a0Luigi Mangione, rejecting the Manhattan district attorney\u2019s theory in a state murder case that the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was \u201cintended to evoke terror.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge Gregory Carro kept other charges in place, including a second-degree murder count that requires prosecutors to prove Mangione intended to kill Thompson but not that he was doing so as an act of terrorism.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Stationary on-street trash bins set to roll out in parts of Brooklyn<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

The city will start rolling out stationary on-street containers known as Empire Bins in Fort Greene and Clinton Hill this fall, Mayor Eric Adams said today.<\/p>\n

The Department of Sanitation will begin placing the rat-resistant curbside bins outside schools in the two neighborhoods before installing them at every school and high-density residential building in Brooklyn Community District 2 next year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Suspect in Kirk killing charged with aggravated murder as prosecutor says DNA found on gun trigger<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old Utah man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, was charged today with aggravated murder, a prosecutor announced, saying Robinson left behind his DNA on the trigger of the rifle that fired the fatal shot.<\/p>\n

The charge means Robinson could face the death penalty if convicted of killing Kirk last week at Utah Valley University in Orem, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0New York Rangers name J.T. Miller captain on the eve of training camp<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

The New York Rangers named J.T. Miller captain today, putting him in the key leadership position three weeks before the start of the NHL season.<\/p>\n

The Rangers announced Miller would be getting the \u201cC\u201d on the eve of the start of training camp and ahead of his first full season back with the team that drafted him. They did not have a captain for much of last season after\u00a0trading Jacob Trouba\u00a0to Anaheim in December.<\/p>\n
