{"id":233168,"date":"2025-09-17T06:28:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T06:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/233168\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T06:28:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T06:28:09","slug":"chinese-dissident-who-led-pro-democracy-group-in-nyc-pleads-guilty-to-spying-for-beijing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/233168\/","title":{"rendered":"Chinese dissident who led pro-democracy group in NYC pleads guilty to spying for Beijing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">NEW YORK &#8212; A member of New York&#8217;s Chinese dissident community pleaded guilty Tuesday to spying on his fellow activists on behalf of the Chinese government. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Yuanjun Tang, 68, had long been an outspoken critic of the Chinese Communist Party, joining monthly protests outside the country\u2019s Manhattan consulate and founding a pro-democracy nonprofit in Flushing, Queens, where he has lived since 2002. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">But as he publicly advocated against his homeland\u2019s government, Tang was quietly acting on orders from Beijing\u2019s intelligence service to collect information on his fellow Chinese American activists, according to a guilty plea entered Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Federal prosecutors, who brought charges against Tang last August, believe he accepted the tasks in order to gain approval to visit family members in China. An emailed inquiry to his attorney was not returned. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cTang\u2019s betrayal of the ideals of the US to help the Chinese government repress pro-democracy activists goes against the very values he claimed to promote,\u201d FBI Assistant Director in Charge Christopher G. Raia said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">At the direction of a Chinese intelligence officer, Tang agreed to photograph and record local protests against China, including a 2023 event in Manhattan dedicated to victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre, according to court documents. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tang also provided the officer with a list of immigration attorneys working to help dissidents gain political asylum. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tang himself was granted asylum in the U.S. in 2002, shortly after escaping to Taiwan from a Chinese prison where he was held for 12 years for his involvement in student-led protests in Tiananmen Square, according to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/taiwan\/archives\/2002\/12\/01\/0000185468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports at the time<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">He then founded a Flushing-based pro-democracy group, the Chinese Democracy Party Eastern US Headquarters Inc., from he which he voiced frequent public criticism of the Chinese Communist Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tang&#8217;s arrest followed several high-profile investigations into China\u2019s attempts to <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/iran-china-harassing-dissidents-united-states-ee48c1b9c32d187b183faaa616d9ab16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harass and silence dissidents abroad<\/a>, part of what federal officials have called a campaign of \u201ctransnational repression.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Last summer, a Chinese American scholar, Shujun Wang, who also co-founded a New York-based pro-democracy group, was <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chinese-american-activist-us-trial-283a3f29da34f89309f28ce152eaaa6e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted<\/a> on charges of gathering information for the Chinese on Hong Kong democracy protesters, supporters of Taiwanese independence, Uyghur and Tibetan activists and others. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The year prior, the Justice Department brought charges against two men it said had <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chinese-government-justice-department-new-york-police-transnational-repression-05624126f8e6cb00cf9ae3cb01767fa1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">helped establish a secret police<\/a> outpost in Manhattan\u2019s Chinatown neighborhood on behalf of the Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In 2018, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/21\/books\/patriot-number-one-lauren-hilgers-review.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speaking with the New York Times<\/a> about a book in which he was featured, Tang offered a hint of disillusionment about the role of a dissident abroad. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIn the first year you speak brave, bold words,\u201d he said. \u201cIn the second, nonsense. By the third, you have nothing to say at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Tang is set to be sentenced in January.
