{"id":23320,"date":"2025-06-29T02:00:12","date_gmt":"2025-06-29T02:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/23320\/"},"modified":"2025-06-29T02:00:12","modified_gmt":"2025-06-29T02:00:12","slug":"fort-worth-lights-city-hall-in-rainbow-colors-for-lgbtq-pride-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/23320\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Worth lights City Hall in rainbow colors for LGBTQ Pride Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As LGBTQ organizers planned the final touches for Fort Worth\u2019s Trinity Pride Fest, City Council member Elizabeth Beck plotted a secret addition to make the Pride celebration that much more special.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Beck, who represents the Near Southside where Trinity Pride took place June 28, directed city staff to illuminate City Hall\u2019s rooftop with rainbow-colored lighting as a public display of solidarity with the LGBTQ community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe LGBTQ community is so used to having to fight for their recognition, to fight to have their celebrations, and so I think a surprise of City Hall being lit up in honor of them and their fight and their pride is an unexpected surprise,\u201d Beck told the Fort Worth Report before it happened. \u201cI just think it\u2019ll bring a little joy to the community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fort Worth\u2019s new City Hall, the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/03\/25\/signed-sealed-and-delivered-at-226-5m-fort-worth-city-hall-is-open-for-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">former Pier 1 building<\/a> at 100 Fort Worth Trail, came with several technological upgrades from the city\u2019s former headquarters at 200 Texas St. Those upgrades include the ability to change the rooftop\u2019s lighting with different colors and\/or designs to recognize events and occasions across Fort Worth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The rooftop typically displays white lighting, but the colors may change to honor federally recognized holidays, city-initiated events and initiatives, and significant federal and statewide events and initiatives, according to Fort Worth\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortworthtexas.gov\/files\/assets\/public\/v\/2\/property-management\/documents\/city-of-fort-worth-city-hall-lighting-policy-and-procedures.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">City Hall lighting policy<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Last June, city staff had begun <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2024\/09\/04\/following-delays-fort-worths-new-city-hall-on-track-for-2025-completion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">migrating into the new City Hall<\/a> building, but the technology wasn\u2019t yet ready to implement Pride Month lighting, Beck said. Now that it\u2019s complete \u2014 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/03\/25\/signed-sealed-and-delivered-at-226-5m-fort-worth-city-hall-is-open-for-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$226.5 million price tag<\/a> \u2014 Beck wants to make the rooftop rainbow lighting an annual tradition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lighting changed at sunset, as Trinity Pride attendees enjoyed performances from musical artists and drag queens, plus a market of local vendors just south of downtown on South Main Street. The festival is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/03\/11\/new-leader-takes-helm-of-fort-worths-trinity-pride-with-plans-to-revamp-2025-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fort Worth\u2019s largest Pride event<\/a>, held annually in June to celebrate the LGBTQ community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trinity Pride board president Roger Calderon, who was in on Beck\u2019s secret, told the Report he was excited and grateful for the council member\u2019s plan. He said the lighting is a \u201cbeautiful culmination of a month that began with a Pride proclamation at City Hall.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in June, Mayor Mattie Parker presented LGBTQ community leaders, including Calderon, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/06\/24\/fort-worth-council-debates-dei-programs-delays-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognition declaring \u201cY\u2019all means all\u201d<\/a> to celebrate Pride Month in Fort Worth. (Mary Abby Goss | Fort Worth Report)<\/p>\n<p>Calderon believes that visibility is important, particularly when it comes from a longtime champion of the LGBTQ community like Beck.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCouncil member Beck\u2019s steadfast support for our community is well documented,\u201d Calderon said in a statement. \u201cThrough gestures both big and small, she has consistently demonstrated her commitment to the LGBTQ community.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/glaad.org\/releases\/glaads-alert-desk-releases-new-data-on-rising-anti-lgbtq-hate-and-extremism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">attacks on the LGBTQ community<\/a> increase both locally and across the country, Beck said, the nation\u2019s 11th-largest city must stand by its LGBTQ residents. She said there have been \u201cattacks on all levels\u201d against the LGBTQ community, specifically noting the state Legislature, where lawmakers debated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/06\/11\/texas-bills-restrictions-lgbtq-transgender\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more than 100 bills aimed at LGBTQ Texans<\/a>, and federal efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/06\/27\/g-s1-74738\/scotus-decisions-birthright-aca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">crack down on LGBTQ rights<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fort Worth has also had missteps in its <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2025\/01\/27\/fort-worths-score-on-lgbtq-inclusiveness-dips-below-100-for-first-time-in-8-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">treatment of the LGBTQ community<\/a>, Beck said. She believes city leadership, including her colleagues on council, must take action to rebuild trust and mend damaged relationships with LGBTQ residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But for now, she hopes her small surprise sparked joy \u2014 and marked a step in the right direction.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cecilia Lenzen is a government accountability reporter for the Fort Worth Report.
