Katherine Donlevy<\/p>\n<p>But the 22-year-old mastermind behind Elizabeth Eats NYC<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/03\/lifestyle\/terrifying-new-app-shows-how-meta-smart-glasses-can-help-you-identify-a-stranger-on-the-street-and-find-their-home-address\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> is delivering a message through The Post <\/a>to her haters: \u201cGet off your high horse, and enjoy the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHolding a camera isn\u2019t practical for me. \u2026 I move around lots, engage with people in real time, and the glasses let me film without a big intrusive camera,\u201d said the college grad, who spoke on condition her identity be kept under wraps.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey help me keep interactions genuine and spontaneous while still creating high-quality content,\u201d Elizabeth explained of her special specs.<\/p>\n<p>The Meta glasses, which retail for $380, have been a part of Elizabeth\u2019s approach since she first started her foodie account in June for another reason, too.<\/p>\n<p> She said she has a hand tremor, which would make holding a camera near-impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth started her account with a photo of herself as her profile picture and only swapped it out for a cartoon version when she rapidly gained millions of followers just weeks into her new content career \u2014 a future she did not foresee.<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth defends her use of the glasses, saying she wants to retain her \u201cpeace and privacy.\u201d Katherine Donlevy<\/p>\n<p>She said that after witnessing other foodie influencers such as Keith Lee get mobbed by fans, she made a conscious decision to then try to keep her identity a secret, a decision she\u2019s glad to have stuck by as her account gained popularity and she began receiving death threats over a joke she made in poor taste about the Israel-Gaza conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m like a normal person. I don\u2019t want to be this huge famous person that can\u2019t leave their apartment without these cameras in my face. I just basically want to lead a normal life and have peace and privacy,\u201d she explained. <\/p>\n<p>Social-media users were quick to call her out for what they see as the hypocrisy, with most of the outrage centering on her use of the discreet recording glasses.<\/p>\n<p>Some viewers call her usage of the glasses \u201ccreepy\u201d and \u201chypocritical.\u201d  Katherine Donlevy<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of viewers have fumed on social media for weeks,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/FoodieSnark\/comments\/1mjnfav\/elizabeth_eats_nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> with one saying,<\/a> \u201cShe ambushes people and records them without them realizing. Exploits them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The foodie influencer fired back that the difference is that the people she films don\u2019t have \u201cmillions of followers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA 10-second clip of someone who isn\u2019t known on the Internet is way different than a 10-second clip of me where there\u2019s so much connotation of things that can happen,\u201d Elizabeth said, adding that she has since changed her approach to ask permission from individuals before she records them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019m being held to a standard that no other content creator has been held to before,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s interesting my videos are singled out for controversy, even though filming people in public has been standard practice since cameras were invented.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy glasses have a blinking light to indicate recording. I 1758104422 make sure anyone who\u2019s a main focus in a video is aware they\u2019re being recorded. I respect requests, and I\u2019ve never posted someone who\u2019s asked not to be on camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chubby Crab owner Tom Wong did not realize Elizabeth was recording him when she visited his shop. Katie Donlevy<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth emphasized that she is only acting with \u201cgood intentions\u201d while, as her TikTok bio says, trying to \u201cungatekeep\u201d the best foodie spots throughout the Big Apple \u2014 which often means highlighting mom-and-pop joints as well as affordable eateries.<\/p>\n<p>But even some of her most positively reviewed restaurants aren\u2019t exactly giving her Meta glasses four stars.<\/p>\n<p>The Chubby Crab in Chinatown was inundated with orders in the days after Elizabeth<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@elizabetheatsnyc\/video\/7519665033660435726\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> posted a viral video<\/a> about its seafood boils that garnered over 100,000 views \u2014 to the point where it ran out of crab.<\/p>\n<p>Still, owner Tom Wong said he \u201cwouldn\u2019t have agreed\u201d to it beforehand if he had known Elizabeth was filming him when she ordered her dish.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a really shy person.
