{"id":23432,"date":"2025-06-29T02:57:11","date_gmt":"2025-06-29T02:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/23432\/"},"modified":"2025-06-29T02:57:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-29T02:57:11","slug":"china-catching-up-with-us-in-algorithms-despite-chip-gap-says-former-microsoft-ai-head","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/23432\/","title":{"rendered":"China catching up with US in algorithms despite chip gap, says former Microsoft AI head"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China still lags behind the US in <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/artificial-intelligence?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence (AI)<\/a> chips, but the country is rapidly catching up in algorithms amid an intense technological race between the world\u2019s two largest economies, according to renowned computer scientist Harry Shum Heung-yeung.AI competition encompassed three key aspects: <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/semiconductors?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">chips<\/a>, algorithms, and applications \u2013 and the US was \u201cclearly\u201d still \u201cfar ahead\u201d in chip technology, said Shum, council chairman at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, at an economic summit hosted by the University of Hong Kong Business School on Friday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">He said the gap China faced in chip production \u201ccannot be bridged in one or two years\u201d, and that computing power remained a significant challenge for companies in mainland China and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">To address these constraints, Shum \u2013 Microsoft\u2019s head of AI and research until 2020 \u2013 suggested that China should focus on breakthroughs in algorithm engineering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is following very closely in algorithms, and <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/topics\/deepseek?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">DeepSeek<\/a> is a good example,\u201d Shum said.
