But who\u2019d fly out to Telluride or up to Toronto when so many of this year\u2019s Big Films\u2014and their Big Stars\u2014are arriving right here on our doorstep?<\/p>\n<p>As ever, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/newyork\/movies\/new-york-film-festival\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Film Festival<\/a>, which begins on September 26 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/newyork\/theater\/lincoln-center-for-the-performing-arts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lincoln Center<\/a>, marks the start of our city\u2019s cinematic season. There are, admittedly, far more films than you\u2019ve likely got time to see. But that\u2019s what we\u2019re here for. So unless you have limitless funds and nothing else to do\u2014in which case, let us introduce you to the $17,500 Gold\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmlinc.org\/nyff\/tickets-and-passes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Pass<\/a>\u2014consider starting with one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/film\/the-most-anticipated-movies-of-the-fall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-buzz titles<\/a> below. (No less than Tom Waits and Charlotte Rampling play the parents.)<\/p>\n<p>Oct 3 at 6, 9pm\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is This Thing On?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directed by Bradley Cooper<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the wide embrace of his directorial debut, A Star is Born, Cooper was surely disappointed by the muted reception to his follow-up, 2023\u2019s high-minded Maestro. This effort\u2014in which Will Arnett plays a recent divorc\u00e9 who becomes a stand-up comedian during an apparent midlife crisis\u2014feels as though it was made with broader appeal in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Oct 10 at 6, 9pm\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cover-Up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directed by Laura Poitras and Mark Obenhaus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If Oscar-winning documentarian Poitras (Citizenfour) has a story to tell, we want to listen. And there may be no more timely topic than this portrait of journalist Seymour Hersh, who has committed his life to decades of tough and unbiased reporting. Hersh comes from an era in which freedom of the press was considered essential by readers and leaders alike. Thank goodness President Idris Elba is on hand to help out.<\/p>\n<p>Sept 28 at 9:15pm, Sept 29 at noon, Oct 6 at 1:30pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>If I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directed by Mary Bronstein<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are those of us who have long wondered when Rose Byrne would finally get her flowers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/movies\/if-i-had-legs-id-kick-you-review-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The answer, it seems, is right now<\/a>. His tale of a modest mechanic obsessed with a vicious government official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/movies\/a-simple-accident-review-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has been collecting honors<\/a> across the globe (including the Palme D\u2019Or at Cannes).<\/p>\n<p>Oct 2 at 6:15pm, Oct 3 at 3:30pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jay Kelly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directed by Noah Baumbach<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is still no star more charming than George Clooney, so kudos to Baumbach and his cowriter Emily Mortimer for exploring a darker side of fame with such unsparing precision. Clooney plays a beloved actor who discovers he\u2019s trapped inside his own celebrity, when he attempts to put his personal life above his profession. He\u2019s determined to change his workaholic ways but his estranged daughter (Riley Keough) is skeptical, as are his hard-edged publicist (Laura Dern) and long-suffering manager (Adam Sandler).<\/p>\n<p>Sept 29 at 8:15pm, Sept 30 at 2:45pm, Oct 2 at 12:45pm, Oct 13 at 5:45pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Mastermind<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directed by Kelly Reichardt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t yet know Josh O\u2019Connor\u2019s name, you will by the end of the year: He has no less than four films out this season. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will be the biggest, but any movie by Reichardt offers the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/movies\/the-mastermind-review-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">potential to be the most interesting<\/a>. So you don\u2019t need us to tell you it\u2019s been loosely adapted from Donald E. But we are excited at the prospect of Jeremy Allen White playing an early-\u201980s Bruce Springsteen, as he stalks the corner of Nebraska and Born in the U.S.A. Don\u2019t expect a traditional biopic here; word is that Cooper\u2019s tightly-focused approach is defiantly unorthodox.<\/p>\n<p>Sept 28 at 6pm, Sept 29 at 2:30pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anemone<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directed by Ronan Day-Lewis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What did it take to get Daniel Day-Lewis back to acting after eight years? His son Ronan, making a high-profile directorial debut with Dad in the lead. The pair also cowrite the script, about a British loner (Day-Lewis) haunted by a traumatic past, and the brother (Sean Bean) who wants to find a way beyond it.<\/p>\n<p>Sept 28 at 3pm, Sept 29 at 3pm, Sept 30 at 1pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blue Moon and Nouvelle Vague<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directed by Richard Linklater<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Linklater charmed Telluride and Toronto audiences with a pair of period films that speak volumes about his personal passions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/movies\/blue-moon-review-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blue Moon<\/a> recreates a 1943 night in the life of tortured lyricist Lorenz Hart (Ethan Hawke), as he drinks at Sardi\u2019s with the likes of Andrew Scott, Margaret Qualley and Bobby Cannavale. The black-and-white <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/movies\/nouvelle-vague-review-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nouvelle Vague<\/a> stars Zoey Deutch as an overwhelmed Jean Seberg, after she arrives in Paris to shoot Jean-Luc Godard\u2019s 1960 classic Breathless.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Moon: Sept 29 at 5:30pm, Sept 30 at 3:45pm<br \/>Nouvelle Vague: Sept 30 at 6pm, Oct 1 at 3:15pm<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Private Life<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Directed by Rebecca Zlotowski<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Zlotowski\u2019s droll murder mystery doesn\u2019t just offer Jodie Foster a chance to lighten up a little after True Detective; it gives her a reason to show off her lifelong fluency in French. She plays an American psychoanalyst who lives in Paris, and gets sidetracked\u2014to say the least\u2014when she becomes convinced a patient has been killed. If you do find yourself with extra time, don\u2019t miss new works from\u2014among others\u2014Claire Denis (The Fence), Christian Petzold (Miroirs No. 3), Lucrecia Martel (Landmarks), Ira Sachs (Peter Hujar\u2019s Day), Paolo Sorrentino (La Grazia), Radu Jude (Kontinental \u201925 and Dracula), Rebecca Miller (the five-part portrait Mr. Scorsese) and Ben Stiller (documenting his parents\u2019 work in Stiller &amp; Meara: Nothing Is Lost).<\/p>\n<p>When is the New York Film Festival?<\/p>\n<p>The NYFF begins on September 26 and runs through October 13.<\/p>\n<p>And\u2026 where is the New York Film Festival?<\/p>\n<p>All screenings will take place at Lincoln Center. Check your ticket carefully, because there are three venues: Alice Tully Hall (1941 Broadway), Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center (144 West 65th Street) and the Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th Street).<\/p>\n<p>How do I get tickets?<\/p>\n<p>Good question!
