That created a safety hazard that the publication found could trap passengers when a Tesla car was in an emergency situation, such as a crash. Now, Bloomberg is back with the news that Tesla plans to <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-09-17\/tesla-is-redesigning-door-handles-that-drew-scrutiny-over-safety?embedded-checkout=true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:redesign;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">redesign<\/a> those problematic handles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 engadget-charcoal\">Tesla design head Franz von Holzhausen appeared on Bloomberg&#8217;s Hot Pursuit! podcast and said the company is considering a new approach that combines the electric and manual release mechanisms. &#8220;The idea of combining the electronic one and the manual one together into one button, I think, makes a lot of sense,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That\u2019s something that we\u2019re working on.&#8221; He didn&#8217;t specify why Tesla was working on a redesign, but it&#8217;s hard to imagine the timing of the federal probe isn&#8217;t relevant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"col-body mb-4 leading-7 text-[18px] md:leading-8 break-words min-w-0 engadget-charcoal\">The company has already been in the NHTSA&#8217;s sights this year. Last month, the regulator opened an <a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/transportation\/evs\/feds-investigate-tesla-over-inaccurate-autopilot-and-fsd-crash-reports-175837772.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:investigation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> into how Tesla was reporting crashes with its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems.
