Lewis, a key member of the \u201cDoomsday Defense\u201d for the Dallas Cowboys during the 1970s and a two-time Super Bowl champion, has died Tuesday at the age of 79.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XH6HMMMXXFDINM33PNUSMS4GGM\">Mississippi State University, where Lewis played football in college, announced his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/msstate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/msstate\/\">death in a post on social media<\/a>. The Cowboys also confirmed Lewis\u2019 death <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallascowboys.com\/news\/d-d-lewis-doomsday-defense-cornerstone-passes-away-at-79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallascowboys.com\/news\/d-d-lewis-doomsday-defense-cornerstone-passes-away-at-79\">on the team\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HKK35X5NIVCBHBOE6MRQA5732M\">He reportedly died at Medical City Plano Hospital. No cause of death was reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"W3LB43C6ZBEALBC45IFRXWTWLY\">\u201cHe was an awesome dad, he was the best dad,\u201d Melna Bourland, Lewis\u2019 daughter,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2025\/09\/17\/dallas-cowboys-dd-lewis-dies-at-79-obituary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/sports\/cowboys\/2025\/09\/17\/dallas-cowboys-dd-lewis-dies-at-79-obituary\/\"> tells The Dallas Morning News<\/a>. \u201cHe would be a big jokester, he loved to do pranks on me and my sister, and he loved to laugh and he was just the best dad anybody could ever have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3RPVTTHPZRE3DITC3WMYUZRCJY\">Lewis, a linebacker, was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Cowboys in 1968. He missed one year while serving in the military but returned in 1970.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OUW4P3IJ5RACJEI7HRBE55TBFM\">He joined the Cowboys as they entered their 1970s heyday. The team never had a losing season during his career and he played in five Super Bowls, winning titles during the 1971 and 1977 seasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WIYHLVFXJ5GRZE4JCODZQ3IQRA\">\u201cD.D. was such a steady force for the Dallas Cowboys,\u201d former teammate Cliff Harris tells the Morning News. \u201cWe knew we could count on D.D. He was the weakside linebacker in our complex Flex defense and I knew or we knew whatever his responsibilities in that Flex defense was, he was going to perform. A great athlete and it\u2019s sad to see him leave this earth early. I feel for his family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"63KYU5Z3SFH4ZC2KCIYMWI4EPQ\">Lewis reached the playoffs in 12 of his 13 seasons and played in 27 playoff games. Only two players appeared in more playoff games, Tom Brady and Jerry Rice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"G5AKE2YXRJEHTFXKYUFTUM36Y4\">According to the Cowboys, he missed only four regular season games during his career. From 1973 to 1981, his final season, he started 132 out of 134 games at weakside linebacker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4LVMXVQ34NBSXNQBSJPFX4E53E\">The Cowboys say the team\u2019s late coach, Tom Landry, once described Lewis as the team\u2019s most underappreciated player.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KI7CTBO4TVA27KL2VIE2MRYZJE\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nfl\/profootballtalk\/rumor-mill\/news\/former-cowboys-lb-d-d-lewis-dies-at-79\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsports.com\/nfl\/profootballtalk\/rumor-mill\/news\/former-cowboys-lb-d-d-lewis-dies-at-79\">According to NBC News<\/a>, Lewis is credited with a famous quote about the Cowboys\u2019 previous home, Texas Stadium, saying \u201cTexas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch his favorite team play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K7UZPKZA2ZEJLDY5LENFLL6NPY\">Lewis was named to the Cowboys Silver Anniversary Team in 1984.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
