{"id":235913,"date":"2025-09-18T08:19:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T08:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/235913\/"},"modified":"2025-09-18T08:19:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T08:19:13","slug":"robert-caro-reflects-on-childhood-as-he-receives-new-york-historicals-historians-laureate-medal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/235913\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Caro reflects on childhood as he receives New York Historical&#8217;s Historians&#8217; Laureate Medal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao MvWXB TjIXL aGjvy ebVHC \">NEW YORK &#8212; Receiving an award from one of Manhattan&#8217;s oldest cultural institutions, <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nyhistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Historical<\/a>, had <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/robert-caro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Caro<\/a> thinking about childhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIt (New York Historical) has been a very integral element of my life since I was a little boy,&#8221; Caro said Wednesday night during his brief remarks as he accepted the first-ever Historians&#8217; Laureate Medal in the organization&#8217;s 221 year-old existence. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">A native New Yorker who grew up near what was then called the New-York Historical Society and still lives just blocks away, Caro remembered many visits growing up as he walked around the neighborhood with a favorite aunt. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">&#8220;Among the various honors I\u2019ve been lucky enough to receive, this is an award that is very special,&#8221; added Caro, whose awards range from the Pulitzer Prize for his epic biography of municipal builder, Robert Moses, \u201cThe Power Broker,\u201d to a National Book Award for the third volume of his celebrated Lyndon Johnson series, \u201cMaster of the Senate.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cAnd in a way, as I stand here before you tonight, I have this wonderful feeling that my life has come full circle, in a wonderful circle,&#8221; he said, speaking to hundreds gathered for The New York Historical&#8217;s \u201cHistory Makers Gala.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Caro, who turns 90 next month and is still working on the long-awaited fifth Johnson book, has for years been the unofficial laureate of The New York Historical. His career is the subject of a permanent exhibition, his archives are stored there and a research room is named for him. He was introduced at the ceremony by a close friend, singer <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/videos-ef6239c73d874e4a908c00c498722237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Judy Collins<\/a>, who cited Caro&#8217;s musical approach to his writing, his attention to rhythm and mood. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThat is why some have said his books read like great novels, and I would say they read like great music,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Also on Wednesday, The New York Historical presented its History Makers Award to the Venezuelan-born conductor <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gustavo-dudamel-eb50e23b1af2c5c182fc975917820432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gustavo Dudamel<\/a>, who next year becomes the musical and artistic director of the New York Philharmonic after leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 2009. Last week, he opened the New York Philharmonic&#8217;s fall season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Dudamel, interviewed on stage by the philanthropist-businessman David M. Rubenstein, said he looked upon moving to New York as \u201can opportunity to open this new chapter\u201d and that he had a \u201cfeeling of connection\u201d to the New York orchestra.
