According to three people familiar with the call, Obama reminded the Democratic nominee for New York City mayor how many would be watching to see if a democratic socialist could pull off running the nation\u2019s largest city, and how many critics would be waiting to pounce if it went wrong.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000f3b6npa7d62j9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Values are important, Obama told him, but prioritizing good hires more so.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000g3b6ntiostjvu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Obama isn\u2019t the only one concerned. Even friends and advisers working with Mamdani\u2019s campaign and like-minded allies on the city council, among the three dozen New York leaders who spoke with CNN, say privately that they fear Mamdani is behind in preparing for what\u2019s ahead if he wins November\u2019s election, as reliable public polls show he is in strong position to do.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfomhbch00003b5yir40kzyn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The call with Obama, one person who spoken with Mamdani about it told CNN, was helpful in giving the candidate a clearer sense of the difference between running and governing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000h3b6nv7gxhh48@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s a moment at the end of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Qe1VXVABW3o&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thenation.com%2F&amp;source_ve_path=MjM4NTE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">video put out by Mamdani\u2019s campaign<\/a> where Vermont Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/17\/politics\/mamdani-bernie-sanders-washington\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> tells him he has \u201can enormous responsibility to show the world that our value system can govern well and efficiently.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000i3b6nv9pgt2no@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mamdani has reached beyond his circle of advisers and Democratic Socialist of America allies as he\u2019s thinking about how he will make his big campaign promises happen and prove that a 33-year-old state assemblyman can run a city with 8 million people, a $115 billion annual budget and the nation\u2019s largest metropolitan police force.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000j3b6nrh742qfm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBeing mayor is just as much about your ability to inspire as it is to govern a big, sprawling, 300,000-person bureaucracy and all that that requires,\u201d said Lincoln Restler, a city councilman from Brooklyn who worked on the transition team for Bill de Blasio, the mayor Mamdani has called the best in his lifetime, after his first election in 2013.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000o3b6nn78aia6h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Allies and advisers say Mamdani has continued to demonstrate how stunned he himself was by a primary win. While he, his campaign manager and counsel all took extended vacations over the summer to celebrate their weddings, they have been rushing since mid-August to prepare even as they also work to win in November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000p3b6natnqd93w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Mamdani, who\u2019s never worked in city government, the job of being mayor of New York poses deeper challenges. Add President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/15\/business\/trump-new-york-city-mamdani\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">threats to slash funding and deploy the National Guard<\/a>, and those who feel he should be doing more to get ready are growing nervous, even as Mamdani can\u2019t legally start a formal transition process unless he wins in November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000q3b6n0r757k1y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s a general feeling of excitement for what he\u2019s done for the electorate. He\u2019s talking about real things that people care about. There\u2019s a buzz about standing up to Trump,\u201d said a Democratic city council member who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal dynamics. \u201cOn the flip side, I think people have a healthy skepticism of the governing piece. Is he going to put good people around him, and can we rely on that happening? Is it going to be a bunch of DSA kids who don\u2019t know what they\u2019re doing running the city? I don\u2019t think that\u2019s what\u2019ll happen, but we need to know more.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000k3b6nc6oz6qte@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mamdani\u2019s relationship with Brad Lander, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/19\/politics\/who-is-brad-lander-ice-arrest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city comptroller who in the final weeks of the Democratic primary<\/a> essentially turned his own mayoral campaign into another leg of Mamdani support, is still recovering from a rocky patch over the summer, according to four people familiar with the matter.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-2234765663.jpg\" alt=\"NYC comptroller Brad Lander listens while mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani speaks during the Jews For Racial And Economic Justice's Mazals Gala on September 10.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000l3b6n2smlx1up@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lander told a variety of leaders that he was interested in a top position like first deputy mayor in the administration, in what a range of anxious New York leaders saw as an implicit promise that an experienced hand would help professionalize Mamdani\u2019s City Hall. That did not go over well when word got back to Mamdani\u2019s orbit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000m3b6ntvscojq0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After nearly a month when they did not speak,  by Labor Day, Lander was telling people maybe he would not be joining the administration after all.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000n3b6n2vsoauds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The two have talked through this recently, and while no job offer was made, Lander has renewed his help for Mamdani in the campaign.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000r3b6nxal4eyvf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Morris Katz, a 26-year-old who has become a close Mamdani political adviser, said the doubts are coming from the same place as the belief that Andrew Cuomo could not be beaten in a Democratic primary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/29\/politics\/andrew-cuomo-new-york-mayor-zohran-mamdani\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before Mamdani stunned him<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000s3b6n02is6i32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOur victory was the direct repudiation of a consultant and political class that have failed this city for decades. It was a culture of excellence that led a campaign dismissed by every pundit to a historic victory and it will be that same culture of excellence that delivers the change this city deserves,\u201d Katz told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfoluc0f000t3b6n5s80ty32@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For those questioning them on youth and inexperience, Katz said, \u201cthe fundamental crisis in our city isn\u2019t just, there isn\u2019t enough that the government is doing, but that the government is doing a bad job. Not everyone who\u2019s been in the halls of power for 20 years is entitled to stay there.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfokoqxx00003b6nb0598vj8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sitting with the business leaders on the steering committee of the Association for a Better New York in August, Mamdani made a previously unreported pledge: \u201cI don\u2019t think my emergency management commissioner has to agree with me about Israel and Palestine,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzman001d3b6n5t58husg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That prompted audible relief in the room, according to two people present, not just because of those upset by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/16\/politics\/mamdani-business-leaders-meeting-new-york\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mamdani\u2019s criticisms of Israel<\/a>, but because they felt it demonstrated that he would not be an ideologue.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzman001e3b6n3en7kgdz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gone are the days of the primary when Mamdani was a constant presence on the streets. He spends most days in individual and group meetings, in person and on Zoom, that are partly study sessions and partly efforts to reassure antagonists and skeptics, whether that\u2019s the group of Jewish leaders who believed he would cancel police protection for the <a href=\"https:\/\/israeldayon5th.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">annual parade honoring Israel<\/a> or the developers who started out by suggesting that he was going to cancel all rent everywhere in the city. (Mamdani has proposed freezing increases on rent-stabilized apartments.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzman001f3b6nuvtti050@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Much of this is working. Several people far from the DSA base tell CNN that they have been struck by Mamdani\u2019s personal charm, attentiveness and sense of pragmatism. Some have found overlapping interests, like the transit union officials who hadn\u2019t prioritized the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/06\/25\/business\/mamdani-mayor-business-reaction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">free buses<\/a> Mamdani promised but did share with him data that shows drivers are attacked less often when riders aren\u2019t asked to pay.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-2214142980.jpg\" alt=\"Supporters hold signs calling for free buses and affordable housing during a rally in support of Zohran Mamdani in the Brooklyn borough of New York, on May 4.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzman001g3b6njx1fxd2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mamdani met last week with former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who spent millions backing Cuomo in the Democratic primary. Sitting together for an hour at the Bloomberg LP offices shortly after this year\u2019s 9\/11 commemoration, they talked about everything from organizing deputy mayors and agency heads to the open bullpen office plan Bloomberg brought to City Hall and talk that Trump might try to seize control of the Twin Towers memorial ahead of next year\u2019s 25th anniversary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzman001h3b6ny8uvzjne@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bradley Tusk, a former Bloomberg aide and campaign manager, told CNN he calls Mamdani a \u201ctechnocratic socialist,\u201d a term which some of the candidate\u2019s advisers say they like.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzman001i3b6nidqca45f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe\u2019s engaging and he has big, transformative ideas that I think need a lot of work to make them actionable, but you can\u2019t debate affordability or how to help on food insecurity or how to help afford rent, or mobility in New York City,\u201d said Robert Wolf, a former president of UBS Investment Bank and CEO of 32 Advisors who had a long Zoom with Mamdani. \u201cIf elected, the business community can either help him succeed or root for his failure \u2014 and in my view, a vibrant New York City is the right answer.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzman001j3b6nlnsy156r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Richard Buery, the chair of this year\u2019s Charter Revision Commission convened by the current mayor and CEO of the nonprofit group Robin Hood that works with many business leaders, agreed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzman001k3b6nb44rmox5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAt a moment where there\u2019s so much division, probably the most important job of a mayor is to be able to listen carefully, and then when you make decisions, have respect with those you wind up disagreeing with,\u201d Buery told CNN. \u201cIt\u2019s critical for any mayor, but especially now.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfolzej6001b3b6nydwnewix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            De Blasio and top aides to Sanders are in Mamdani\u2019s ear as informal advisers. But quietly, Patrick Gaspard \u2013 a behind-the-scenes powerbroker in New York before and after his turn as political director in the Obama White House \u2013 has been accompanying Mamdani to meetings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom1ffx001r3b6nmnghietf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHis arrival is a disruption of a long line of a particular kind of access that has to be recognized in the comments, the anxiety, the critiques that could surface in the process around his transition,\u201d Gaspard said of Mamdani.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom1ffx001s3b6nad9wziml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mamdani has also talked with Dan Garodnick, a former city councilman from Manhattan\u2019s East Side who\u2019s currently the chair of the City Planning Commission for Eric Adams, now being eyed for a top spot in an administration. And he\u2019s been leaning on Maria Torres-Springer, the former first deputy mayor under Adams who quit earlier this year, as well as de Blasio\u2019s two picks for that role, Tony Shorris and Dean Fuleihan, and former top Bloomberg aides Janette Sadik-Khan and Dan Doctoroff.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom1ffx001t3b6nwqxww9sa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            New York Attorney General Tish James has been trying to guide operations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom1ffx001u3b6ny45mo52p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere are a number of individuals who\u2019ll be in his administration who are seasoned employees who know government,\u201d James told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-2233426338.jpg\" alt=\"From left: Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Sen. Several have been explicitly turned away, left with the sense that Mamdani\u2019s young and similarly inexperienced inner circle is suspicious of outsiders or uninterested in those who didn\u2019t back his campaign.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom4zs2002d3b6n1jyzvh3p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Half a dozen people who\u2019ve met with Mamdani and top advisers tell CNN they were dismayed by the responses they received when pressing on how quickly after being elected he\u2019d have to turn around the package of requests for the state legislature they hope will yield as much as $10 billion in new revenue, and how soon after being inaugurated he\u2019d have to finish a preliminary executive budget.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfombmi0003d3b6ntgku99i9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Buery, as chair of the charter commission appointed by the current mayor, fielded a phone call in early August from Mamdani urging against including a question for this year\u2019s ballot that would have eliminated partisan primaries \u2014 a change advisers for weeks had been panicking could complicate winning a second term and future DSA gains.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom17n1001p3b6nbu7irdje@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mamdani has not tamped down talk of democratic socialists challenging establishment Democrats in primaries. Several state senators and assembly members, who emboldened DSA members are talking about targeting, have votes Mamdani would need for the new revenue from an already wary state legislature. Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie\u2019s endorsement this week is an example of the ongoing bridge-building.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom3lrw00223b6njbw5wct1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, US Rep. Laura Gillen, a freshman Democrat from a swing district in the Long Island suburbs, has told people in frustration that she\u2019s heard that Mamdani has said he\u2019d go campaign against her if she continued to criticize him, as she has done from the day after he won the primary through Gov. Kathy Hochul\u2019s endorsement of him this week. Whatever strength Mamdani has shown in the city, Gillen backers note, her electorate is notably different.   A Gillen spokesperson did not comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom3lrw00233b6ni85yixv4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Any moderation Mamdani might attempt would face its own pushback from a base so demanding that at his town hall at Brooklyn College two weeks ago with Sanders, questions from the crowd included a demand for him to intervene for the adjunct faculty members who had been fired for participating in anti-Israel encampments. Now, Cab\u00e1n told CNN, she believes there will be a \u201cmagic\u201d of outsiders eager to join the administration fusing into a city government and working together with likeminded existing employees.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom3lrw00263b6n51psd0iw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou run on a pared-down thing that you\u2019re going to focus on, because you can\u2019t overwhelm people with things, and you\u2019re going to move towards and accomplish a lot more than that,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom3lrw00273b6n9l6h03y2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She also acknowledged how many people, from the DSA to the Trump White House, will be watching closely.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom3lrw00283b6n94s9qftr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve obviously got a target on our back, not just because of who our next mayor\u2019s going to be, but because it\u2019s New York City, and the power we hold in the world,\u201d Cab\u00e1n said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Hunting for a November mandate<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom511g002h3b6nc2npci07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Those close to Mamdani say that long before he was at 1% in the polls, he was talking about how to make his ideas reality.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom511g002i3b6nbbroohv4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            According to Katz, Mamdani made that clear in their first meeting a year-and-a-half ago. \u201cI\u2019m not going to do this if I don\u2019t think I can deliver on what we lay out,\u201d he told Katz then.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom3k9w00203b6n702c5b28@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            His studious ambiguity now about what exactly he is proposing or where he diverges from the DSA platform hasn\u2019t dented his support so far. Nor have the attacks from his opponents about his lack of experience, like Adams dismissing him with a reference to his brief music career as \u201ca rapper, assemblyman, only was there for 50% of his votes,\u201d or Cuomo saying of Mamdani\u2019s platform, \u201cit\u2019s madness, it\u2019s fantasy, it\u2019s utopian theory \u2014 and this is New York City, it\u2019s not utopia.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom511g002f3b6n2coev1gb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mamdani says his only demand is for a process that \u201cis rigorous, and one that is actually focused on outcomes,\u201d as he put it at an event focused on public safety last week in New York where he quoted a lot of statistics from other cities but was short on details for how many people he\u2019d plan to hire for his proposed Department of Community Safety or how exactly he\u2019d get the $1 billion he wants to put behind it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom511g002g3b6nhz2aoncw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He dodged one of the most common administration questions he gets \u2014 will he keep the current police commissioner? \u2014 and sidestepped anything about a replacement if the answer turns out to be no.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfon25jk000k3b6nxwdm90s2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These days, a solid lead in hand, Mamdani is quietly building lists of possible hires in New York and beyond \u2013 including internationally \u2013 that he\u2019s expecting to reach out to after Election Day, even as he stays focused on the campaign.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfom511g002l3b6ndgqi4xxz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe best way to prepare for January,\u201d he said at the town hall with Sanders, \u201cis by winning a mandate in November.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Facebook Tweet Email Link New York \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 Barack Obama pivoted from praise to a warning.
