That\u2019s crucial because Samsung has previously restricted new product lines to certain markets such as South Korea or China, like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 SE, which it released in those countries last year. Chinese tech giant Huawei already offers a tri-folding phone, but the company doesn\u2019t sell its products in the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj00093b6nuk7766jf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The release would come as Samsung, Apple and other device makers are experimenting with new designs to wow consumers \u2013 an increasingly challenging feat as people hold onto their phones for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/05\/17\/smartphone-users-are-waiting-longer-before-upgrading-heres-why.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">longer<\/a> than before and analysts question whether new AI devices will one day supplant the smartphone.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfof6rq10008356ngeant0i7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple is launching the iPhone Air on Friday, the first major redesign of its most important product in nearly a decade, and reportedly plans to introduce its first foldable phone as early as 2026, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2025-03-16\/apple-iphone-17-air-foldable-iphone-details-ai-crisis-to-haunt-top-100-event-m8bl3a9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Samsung launched the seventh generation of its foldable phones over the summer and is preparing a new version of its slimmer Galaxy S Edge smartphone for next year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfo7sgng00033b6neycnyy5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Apple and Samsung collectively account for roughly 35% of phones shipped globally, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idc.com\/promo\/smartphone-market-share\/market-share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">International Data Corporation<\/a> \u2014 and as the two leading smartphone makers, they are seen as bellwethers for<strong> <\/strong>the industry.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfo8b27n000d3b6nfpwbmfix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think what we\u2019re seeing is a bit more of a return to life before (the smartphone),\u201d when older cell phones had different forms and people wanted a variety of options, Drew Blackard, senior vice president of mobile<strong> <\/strong>product management for Samsung Electronics America, told CNN in a joint interview with Minseok Kang, Samsung\u2019s global head of smartphone product planning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfo8992q000a3b6ngvx9majx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The upcoming tri-fold device, which folds in two places to provide a larger screen than its current<strong> <\/strong>foldable phones, will be the most radical change to Samsung\u2019s smartphone lineup since it launched its first foldable phone in 2019.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfo83nmd00083b6nbwpj4279@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The company has said little about the device other than that it plans to launch it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/business\/tech-science\/20250710\/samsung-seeks-to-roll-out-tri-fold-phone-by-year-end-head-of-smartphone-business-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">by the end of the year<\/a>. Samsung declined to comment on the specifics around market availability and launch timing for the the tri-fold. The company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/07\/09\/tech\/new-foldable-phones-samsung-apple-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Galaxy Z Fold 7<\/a> has an eight-inch screen when unfolded, making it slightly smaller than an iPad Mini and significantly smaller than a standard iPad or iPad Air.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000e3b6nouup7l8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The executives declined to provide specific details about the tri-fold screen size, but Blackard said: \u201cWe don\u2019t want to offer the exact same experience in a slightly different form factor.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000f3b6n5dl8v5qz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Samsung has shown <a href=\"https:\/\/global.samsungdisplay.com\/29253\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">concepts of devices<\/a> that fold into thirds instead of in half at trade shows such as the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. One concept, called the Flex G, opens like a brochure, while the Flex S prototype folds inward and outward, creating an \u201cS\u201d shape and providing the equivalent of three screens in one device.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000g3b6n9tecc0ou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Samsung has yet to release a product based on those prototypes, but its first tri-fold will be a bet that consumers are willing to splurge to fit an even larger screen in their pockets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfo8qrqk000j3b6neimpbflm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think\u2026 the exciting part is getting it out into the wild and then ultimately seeing what different users are attracted to,\u201d Blackard said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000h3b6ntxybu0zm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Samsung\u2019s tri-folding phone could be expensive and niche like its Galaxy Z Fold, which only recently began gaining traction. But it could help the company differentiate itself from the competition and lure shoppers away from other phone brands. Blackard said that on a percentage basis, the company\u2019s foldable phones attract twice as many non-Samsung phone owners compared to its standard flagship phones.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000i3b6nkuw4vqns@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For next year\u2019s Galaxy S lineup, Samsung plans to release a sequel to the Galaxy S25 Edge, which now faces new competition from the iPhone Air. Although it\u2019s not confirmed, Kang suggested Samsung is likely to begin selling the S25 Edge\u2019s successor in the first quarter of next year alongside the Galaxy S26 lineup instead of in the spring. A person familiar with Samsung\u2019s plans said the company\u2019s design philosophy around making devices slimmer will apply to future product launches, including its flagship Galaxy S series.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000j3b6n41e6v4ra@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But whether thinner designs are enough to boost sales remains to be seen. Blackard and Kang wouldn\u2019t comment on sales of the Galaxy S25 Edge, but Korean news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelec.kr\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=37255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The Elec<\/a> reported in June that the model\u2019s sales were falling short of expectations.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-2192634777.jpg\" alt=\"The Samsung booth during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on January 10.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000k3b6n29oygjbc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The focus on slimness has fueled speculation about the emergence of phones with no charging ports, a design choice that Apple reportedly considered for the iPhone Air, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2025-03-16\/apple-iphone-17-air-foldable-iphone-details-ai-crisis-to-haunt-top-100-event-m8bl3a9c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>. Eliminating the charging port would mean solely relying on wireless chargers, but it could make phones substantially thinner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000l3b6nq4qlwhi9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Samsung has floated the idea of a port-free phone internally, according to Kang.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000m3b6ny35tqfmg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s no technical limitation,\u201d said Blackard when asked about whether Samsung has considered a phone without charging ports.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000n3b6n3t2o60t9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Samsung hasn\u2019t developed a phone without a charging port and doesn\u2019t currently have plans to do so. While most smartphones support cable-free charging, wireless chargers aren\u2019t widely available in public spaces for when consumers might need to power up their phones in a pinch, Blackard said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000p3b6nbxr1x3pz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kang compared it to another extreme idea Samsung had a decade ago: a smartphone with a transparent screen.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000q3b6n5fsccz3u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cDefinitely, (it) was on the table internally at Samsung,\u201d Kang said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000r3b6nspdbpy84@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But similar to the port-less phone idea, the compromises of a transparent phone would have outweighed the benefits. For example, Kang said it would have been difficult to make the entire device transparent because of the battery and charging port.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000s3b6nreweqn1a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen we consider new devices, the first topic which we are currently thinking about is what kind of benefit we can deliver,\u201d Kang said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfmusxzj000t3b6nrmpi2pf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For now, that benefit, in Samsung\u2019s view, will come in the form of slim and foldable phones \u2014 even though sales of such devices only make up a sliver of the broader smartphone market, according to market research data.
