The daughter of immigrants thought her accent was too strong, and she only had seven years of restaurant experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">But she learned about a seven-week \u201cCareer in Finance\u201d program offered by <a href=\"https:\/\/ascenddallas.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ascend Dallas<\/a>, a nonprofit focused on empowering women and fighting poverty. Hope Cottage\u2019s services include prenatal care, diapers and educational classes to help underserved and uninsured families. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Access to health services matters because Texas leads the nation\u2019s highest uninsured rate at 21.6% for adults, with Dallas leading the state at 24% uninsured, said Wayne White, president and CEO of the Communities Foundation of Texas, during an event in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/06\/26\/97-million-in-grants-awarded-to-north-texas-groups-to-expand-health-services\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2025\/06\/26\/97-million-in-grants-awarded-to-north-texas-groups-to-expand-health-services\/\">June<\/a>. Oftentimes, our systems make poverty and illness even more difficult. We have the power to fight these inequities if we link arm in arm and work together to build a better, healthier Dallas for our neighbors,\u201d Bohan told The News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Ayshia Langrum told attendees this holistic approach worked for her, as she initially felt \u201clost\u201d about motherhood. Langrum participated in Ascend Dallas\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/ascenddallas.org\/for-women\/my-first-baby\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nurse-Family Partnership<\/a> program, which supports low-income families from pregnancy through the child\u2019s second year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Ascend Dallas connected Langrum with a registered nurse to navigate her through pregnancy and motherhood. She\u2019s now working with a career coach through Ascend\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ascenddallas.org\/for-women\/mymoney\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Economic Advancement<\/a> program.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4096 \/ 2732\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"4096\" height=\"2732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/6C5U5P3J6JALLAMZ4KJ722JJIY.jpg\" alt=\"Ayshia Langrum (left) laughs as she talks about her experience with Ascend Dallas\u2019...\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ayshia Langrum (left) laughs as she talks about her experience with Ascend Dallas\u2019 Nurse-Family Partnership program, on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025, in Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>El\u00edas Valverde II \/ Staff Photographer<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cEventually I would have launched my business,\u201d Langrum said, \u201cBut I think it happened a lot sooner, thanks to the financial coach. &#8230; Now I\u2019m an author and a business owner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">About 2,635 people benefited from Ascend\u2019s programs last year, and 87% of them made below $48,000 before they became clients for the nonprofit, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ascenddallas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/AD_2024-Impact-Report-Final.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ascend\u2019s 2024 impact report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">But in Ascend\u2019s Economic Advancement program alone, the nonprofit\u2019s financial counseling clients reached $256,883 in savings and reduced non-mortgage debt by $591,038, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ascenddallas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/AD_2024-Impact-Report-Final.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Those results impressed funders and community partners. That matters, because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northtexasgivingday.org\/organization\/Ascend-Dallas\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ascend<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northtexasgivingday.org\/organization\/HopeCottage\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hope Cottage<\/a> are among the more than 3,600 nonprofits seeking support during the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northtexasgivingday.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">North Texas Giving Day<\/a> event.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Victor Vonico Johnson, the community outreach coordinator for Prosperity Bank, told The News his company is a sponsor for Ascend. He said he\u2019s fascinated by their work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThe work that Ascend does requires resources,\u201d Johnson said.
