{"id":236386,"date":"2025-09-18T12:55:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-18T12:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/236386\/"},"modified":"2025-09-18T12:55:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-18T12:55:10","slug":"uk-faces-years-of-anaemic-growth-amid-tax-and-regulation-burden-says-next-next","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/236386\/","title":{"rendered":"UK faces years of \u2018anaemic\u2019 growth amid tax and regulation burden, says Next | Next"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Bosses at the clothing and homeware chain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/next\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Next<\/a> are forecasting years of \u201canaemic growth\u201d across the UK as the retailer claims that regulation, government spending and higher taxes would hurt jobs and productivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The FTSE 100 company, which is headed by the Conservative peer Simon Wolfson, said that while it did not believe the economy was heading towards a \u201ccliff edge\u201d, the weakening outlook gave the company \u201canother reason to be cautious\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Next\u2019s half-year earnings report said: \u201cThe medium- to long-term outlook for the UK economy does not look favourable. To be clear, we do not believe the UK economy is approaching a cliff edge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cAt best we expect anaemic growth, with progress constrained by four factors: declining job opportunities; new regulation that erodes competitiveness; government spending commitments that are beyond its means; and a rising tax burden that undermines national productivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next CEO and Tory peer Lord Wolfson. Photograph: Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Shares tumbled by 6% in early trading on Thursday, making Next the biggest faller on the FTSE 100.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The warning came as the company announced it would hand a further \u00a399m to its shareholders, via a dividend worth 87p per share. It followed a near-18% jump in half-year pre-tax profits to \u00a3509m, on a statutory basis, as sales in the six months to July rose by 10.3% to \u00a33.3bn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Next said: \u201cOur enthusiasm is tempered by the knowledge that the first half was boosted by factors that are unlikely to continue and the belief that the UK economy is likely to weaken going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Next and Lord Wolfson have been strong critics of the government\u2019s decision to raise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/jul\/17\/worse-for-hospitality-than-covid-bosses-blame-reeves-budget-for-uk-downturn\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> employers\u2019 national insurance contributions<\/a> during last year\u2019s autumn budget. They are now hitting out at the pending employment rights bill, which is expected to ban zero-hours contracts, end fire-and-rehire practices, and entitle workers to sick pay from their first day on the job.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The bill <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/law\/2025\/sep\/14\/starmer-urged-to-make-populist-case-for-workers-rights-reforms\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">returned to the Commons this week<\/a> with a pledge by senior government figures not to water down changes, despite the exit of its champion Angela Rayner, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/sep\/05\/angela-rayner-stands-down-over-stamp-duty-row\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quit as deputy prime minister earlier this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Next said on Thursday that while it welcomed \u201cwell-intentioned\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2025\/aug\/31\/why-zero-hours-workers-welcome-labour-rights-bill\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> reforms in the bill,<\/a> it believed many measures would have \u201cthe unintended consequence of reducing jobs and eliminating earnings potential\u201d.
