Vice President JD Vance described the \u201cvery tough moment\u201d he delivered the news to President Trump in the Oval Office that Charlie Kirk was assassinated,<\/a> as he comforted White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was the person who walked into the Oval Office and said, \u2018Mr. President, I\u2019m sorry but Charlie\u2019s passed,\u201d Vance recalled to Fox News\u2019 Jesse Watters<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cThat was a very tough moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe supported each other in that moment as you do with your friends, but man, that was a bad, bad day,\u201d he expressed.<\/p>\n

The 41-year-old veep said he had just finished a meeting in his West Wing office when his phone began blowing up with messages at around 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 10.<\/p>\n

\u201cI looked at my phone and there were a bunch of group chats \u2014 frankly, a lot of them that Charlie was in \u2014 where they said \u2018Charlie, praying for you, brother. Hope you\u2019re doing OK,\u2019\u201d Vance said. \u201cI opened up my door and someone said \u2018Charlie\u2019s been shot\u2019<\/a> and it hit me like, \u2018this is very real, this is very serious.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance remembered the tense moments after finding out the 31-year-old was shot by alleged assassin Tyler Robinson <\/a>while the Turning Point USA founder and dad of two held an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.<\/p>\n

The VP and his team spent the \u201cnext hour\u201d working to get confirmation on Kirk\u2019s condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe called Mike and said, \u2018hey, what\u2019s going on?\u2019\u201d Vance said, seemingly referencing Kirk\u2019s chief of staff Mikey McCoy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe news was discombobulated. Nobody knew what was happening. It was a very chaotic moment. There was a brief period where we were getting good reports from the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance said he and the rest of his staff learned about Kirk\u2019s death a short time later, approximately an hour before the news was made public.<\/p>\n

The former senator from Ohio rushed down the hall to the Oval Office to update Trump, where he embraced Wiles, who had broken into tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe doesn\u2019t show emotion. She\u2019s even keeled the whole way. I just gave Susie a hug and I guess all of us kind of lost it,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n

Trump, for his part, remained \u201cvery stoic\u201d after being told the news of Kirk\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president is very stoic. He was clearly upset. He just went quiet and let it absorb a little bit. And then just shook his head and said, \u2018Man, he was a good guy and we really loved him.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vance says he watched one video of the assassination but refused to watch it again.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to see that happen to my friend ever again,\u201d he told Watters.<\/p>\n

Vance shared a tribute to his \u201cdear friend\u201d Kirk <\/a>hours after his death, where he revealed the conservative influencer was one of the reasons he started running for office.<\/p>\n

The \u201cHillbilly Elegy\u201d author detailed the budding friendship the two formed when they met before 2018 that led them all the way to Vance being named Trump\u2019s VP pick.<\/p>\n
