Checks are due to hit mailboxes in the coming weeks. Eligible homeowners will not have to do anything to receive the checks, as DOF will automatically be sending them.<\/p>\n<p>As of November 12, 2024, all properties with one to nine residential units \u2014 including one- and two-family homes \u2014 are required to use bins, 55 gallons or less, with secure lids for trash set out. Those residents who already use a bin of similar size may continue to use it only until June 2026, when they will be required to use the official NYC Bin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding a cleaner New York City is going to require all of us to work together to keep trash off our streets. To encourage everyone to do their part and to help put more money back into the pockets of working-class New Yorkers, we\u2019ll be covering the cost of the NYC Bin for most one- and two-family homeowners,\u201d said <b>Mayor Adams<\/b>. \u201cOur \u2018Trash Revolution\u2019 is now not only making our city cleaner, but also more affordable. I encourage everyone who has not yet to order an NYC Bin to do so today. There\u2019s no reason to wait \u2014 cleaning up our city starts at home, so make sure to get your NYC Bin and get cash back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile NYC Bins were already the most affordable containers of their quality on the market, this rebate makes it even easier for homeowners to purchase their NYC Bins,\u201d said <b>Acting NYC Sanitation Commissioner Lojan<\/b>.\u202f\u201cNYC Bins are delivering cleaner streets and sidewalks, and fewer rats, and I encourage those who have not yet ordered their bin to ACT NOW using this rebate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis rebate is one more way we\u2019re making life in the city more affordable for working-class New Yorkers,\u201d said <b>DOF Commissioner Niblack<\/b>. \u201cBy helping cover the cost of an official NYC Bin, we\u2019re making it easier for homeowners to comply with the new rules while reducing the burden on their household budgets. We\u2019re proud to play a part in keeping our city cleaner, healthier, and more affordable for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOF will send letters in the coming weeks notifying homeowners of this refund:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Homeowners who have already purchased their NYC Bin online or by phone will automatically receive a check for $59.30.<\/li>\n<li>Those who have not yet purchased their NYC Bin will receive a letter notifying them that when they purchase their bin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bins.nyc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a> or by calling 855-692-2467, they will automatically receive a check within 30 days of making their purchase.<\/li>\n<li>Those who have purchased or will purchase their NYC Bin in person at Home Depot will receive a voucher code that they can use online \u2014 with a proof of purchase \u2014 to request their reimbursement check.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>STAR and E-STAR credits and exemptions are generally for property owners whose total household income is less than $500,000. The DOF will mail checks to homeowners who have applied for this credit in 2024 or 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The rat-resistant NYC Bins are compatible with mechanical tippers being installed on DSNY\u2019s standard rear-loading collection trucks, which facilitate safer and cleaner collection.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s announcement builds on Mayor Adams\u2019 commitment to a cleaner, more affordable city, and is another step in the \u201cTrash Revolution,\u201d the Adams administration\u2019s citywide effort to move trash from black bags on the sidewalk to rat-resistant, closed containers:\u202f<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In October 2022, the Adams administration kicked off the Trash Revolution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/754-22\/mayor-adams-sanitation-commissioner-tisch-drastically-reduced-hours-trash-will-sit-nyc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by changing set-out times for both residential and commercial waste<\/a>\u202ffrom 4:00 PM \u2014 one of the earliest set-out times in the country \u2014 to 8:00 PM beginning in April 2023, while also allowing earlier set-out if the material is in a container. This incentivization of containerization was paired with major changes to DSNY operations, picking up well over a quarter of all trash at 12:00 AM rather than at 6:00 AM, particularly in high density parts of the city, and ending a practice by which up to one-fifth of trash had been purposefully left out for a full day.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n<li>Later that month, DSNY published the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/dsny\/downloads\/resources\/reports\/future-of-trash.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Future of Trash<\/a>\u201d report, the first meaningful attempt to study containerization models in New York City, and the playbook to get it done.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n<li>In July 2023, containerization requirements went into effect for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/680-23\/mayor-adams-sanitation-commissioner-tisch-next-phase-war-rats-all-businesses-must\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">all food-related businesses in New York City<\/a>. These businesses \u2014 restaurants, delis, bodegas, bars, grocery stores, caterers, and more \u2014 produce an outsized amount of the type of trash that attracts rats.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n<li>That same month, installation of the initial 10-block, 14-school, Manhattan Community Board 9 pilot containers began leading to reductions in rat sightings of approximately 60 percent.\u202f<\/li>\n<li>In September 2023,\u202fcommercial containerization requirements extended to chain businesses\u202fof any type with five or more locations in New York City. These chain businesses tend to produce a large total volume of trash.\u202f<\/li>\n<li>In February 2024, Mayor Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/089-24\/mayor-adams-new-anti-trash-technology-launches-next-phase-city-s-war-trash\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled a new, automated, side-loading garbage truck<\/a>\u202fand a new data-driven containerization strategy, affirming a commitment from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/067-24\/mayor-adams-lays-out-future-focused-vision-working-class-new-yorkers-third-state-the-city\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mayor Adams\u2019 2024 State of the City address<\/a>\u202fto set New York City on the course to store all trash put out for pickup in containers. This truck was unveiled four years earlier than industry experts thought possible.<\/li>\n<li>In March 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/680-23\/mayor-adams-sanitation-commissioner-tisch-next-phase-war-rats-all-businesses-must\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">container requirements went into effect for\u202fall businesses<\/a>\u202f\u2014 of every type \u2014 in New York City\u202fto get their trash off the streets and into a secure bin.\u202f\u202f<\/li>\n<li>In November 2024, container requirements went into effect for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/530-24\/mayor-adams-sanitation-commissioner-tisch-first-ever-official-nyc-bin-trash-pick-up-\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low-density residential buildings<\/a>\u202f\u2014 those with one to nine units \u2014 containerizing approximately 70 percent of all trash in the city. \u202f<\/li>\n<li>In May 2025, Mayor Adams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/293-25\/mayor-adams-establishes-historic-levels-permanent-dsny-funding-clean-public-spaces-part\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">committed over $32 million in permanent funding<\/a>\u202ffor DSNY to keep New York City clean as part of the Fiscal Year 2026 Executive Budget, better known as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/271-25\/mayor-adams-releases-best-budget-ever-fiscal-year-2026-executive-budget-makes-significant\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Best Budget Ever<\/a>.\u201d This decision permanently allocates resources to key aspects of Mayor Adams\u2019 cleanliness agenda, establishing permanent high levels of funding to protect the cleanliness and quality of life of city neighborhoods for generations to come.\u202f<\/li>\n<li>In June 2025, Mayor Adams announced that \u2014 following the installation of approximately 1,100 on-street containers for residential trash from the largest buildings \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/mayors-office\/news\/2025\/06\/the-empire-bin-strikes-back-against-rats-next-phase-trash-revolution-begins-west\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">100 percent of trash in Manhattan Community Board 9 is now covered by containerization requirements<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>###<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"NEW YORK \u2013 New York City Mayor Eric Adams, New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) Acting Commissioner&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":157441,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5122],"tags":[5229,405,403,5226,5225,5228,5227,67,586,132,5230,68,2969],"class_list":{"0":"post-237122","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york","8":"tag-america","9":"tag-new-york","10":"tag-new-york-city","11":"tag-newyork","12":"tag-newyorkcity","13":"tag-ny","14":"tag-nyc","15":"tag-united-states","16":"tag-united-states-of-america","17":"tag-unitedstates","18":"tag-unitedstatesofamerica","19":"tag-us","20":"tag-usa"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/115227041746520050","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/237122","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=237122"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/237122\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/157441"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=237122"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=237122"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=237122"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
