{"id":23786,"date":"2025-06-29T06:12:09","date_gmt":"2025-06-29T06:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/23786\/"},"modified":"2025-06-29T06:12:09","modified_gmt":"2025-06-29T06:12:09","slug":"mets-hold-players-only-meeting-as-season-threatens-to-go-off-rails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/23786\/","title":{"rendered":"Mets hold players only meeting as season threatens to go off rails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PITTSBURGH \u2014 Saturday night became an unexpected meet and greet for the Mets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the aftermath <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/28\/sports\/mets-free-fall-continues-as-carlos-mendoza-gets-ejected-in-loss-to-pirates\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of a second straight noncompetitive loss <\/a>against a last-place club, the Mets held a players only meeting in the visiting clubhouse at PNC Park with the hope that vocalization would be the first step toward recovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brandon Nimmo (who did not speak in the meeting) indicated that Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso were among the \u201csix or seven\u201d players who spoke up.<\/p>\n<p> Another player present told The Post that Juan Soto spoke during the meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not \u2018rah, rah,\u2019 like, \u2018Now, the season is going to turn around,\u2019 \u201d Lindor said after the 9-2 loss to the Pirates. \u201cWe are competing still. We are one game out of first place. We are on top in the wild card.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not like a magic thing. This is not how it works. If that\u2019s how it worked, we would have done it a while ago, but it\u2019s just part of the adversity we are dealing with. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The Mets lost for the 12th time in 15 games, emerging from a rain delay in the second inning to fall flat against the hapless Bucs for a second straight night. <\/p>\n<p>In the two games, the Mets have been outscored 18-3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This after the Mets had appeared to turn the corner on the last home stand by winning their final two games against the Braves to earn a series split.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the Mets lost a seventh straight game last weekend, Lindor was asked about the possibility of a players only meeting. <\/p>\n<p>He said at the time that any such discussion would have to occur \u201corganically.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>And that is how he described the origins of Saturday\u2019s meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.51703704;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36382777\" width=\"895\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/juan-soto-22-new-york-107340867.jpg\" alt=\"Juan Soto #22 of the New York Mets at bat.\" class=\"wp-image-36382777\"  \/>Juan Soto spoke at the meeting. Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter the game we all sat here and it just happened,\u201d Lindor said. \u201cWe collectively as a group decided to start talking to each other and that is what good teams do. We all rely on each other. We all bounce ideas off each other.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Mets held a players only meeting on May 29 last season with the team sputtering and soon began a turnaround that ended in Game 6 of the NLCS. <\/p>\n<p>But the club also brought in new pieces around that time, including Jose Iglesias, the ringleader of the \u201cOMG\u201d Mets who captivated New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Nimmo described this latest meeting as a community forum.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t necessarily one guy saying, \u2018Hey, you need to do this or that,\u2019 \u201d Nimmo said. \u201cThis was more of just a community talk and getting things out there. It was good. We\u2019ll see if it works or not.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Soto, who has been among the few Mets producing lately \u2014 he owns a 1.214 OPS in June \u2014 told players to \u201ckeep believing,\u201d according to a source.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDelivering insights on all things Amazin\u2019s\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for Inside the Mets by Mike Puma, exclusively on Sports+\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Neither Lindor nor Alonso would divulge what message they imparted. Alonso said several issues, not just one, have plagued the Mets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust collectively as a group \u2014 offensively, defensively, baserunning \u2014 we\u2019re not playing our cleanest baseball,\u201d Alonso said. \u201cWe\u2019re not playing to our maximum potential right now. It shows in the record. We\u2019re playing good games or staying in games, but I think we need to do a better job of finishing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lindor hopes that talking it out will serve the players well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in a position where we are taught to keep things inside,\u201d Lindor said. \u201cWhen we all see guys talking, it seems like we are all going through the same thing at the same time, so why not talk about it?
