A study in contrasts,
\nthis colorful cosmic skyscape<\/a>
\nfeatures
\nstars, dust, and glowing gas<\/a>
\nin the vicinity of NGC 6914.<\/p>\n

The
\ninterstellar complex of nebulae<\/a>
\nlies some 6,000 light-years away,
\ntoward the high-flying northern constellation
\nCygnus and the plane<\/a> of our Milky Way Galaxy.<\/p>\n

Obscuring interstellar dust clouds appear in
\nsilhouette while reddish hydrogen
\nemission nebulae<\/a>,
\nalong with the dusty blue
\nreflection nebulae<\/a>,
\nfill the cosmic canvas.<\/p>\n

Ultraviolet radiation from the massive, hot, young stars of the
\nextensive
\nCygnus OB2<\/a>
\nassociation ionize the region’s atomic
\nhydrogen gas<\/a>, producing
\nthe characteristic red glow as protons and electrons recombine.<\/p>\n

Embedded Cygnus OB2 stars also provide the
\nblue starlight strongly reflected by the dust clouds.<\/p>\n

The over one degree wide telescopic field of view spans
\nabout 100 light-years at the estimated distance of NGC 6914.<\/p>\n
