{"id":238309,"date":"2025-09-19T06:51:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T06:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/238309\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T06:51:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T06:51:12","slug":"nasa-official-issues-statement-on-3i-atlas-as-images-reveal-the-interstellar-object-has-grown-a-striking-new-feature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/238309\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Official Issues Statement on 3I\/ATLAS as Images Reveal the Interstellar Object Has &#8216;Grown&#8217; a Striking New Feature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Astronomers have obtained new images of the mysterious interstellar object <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/3i-atlas-the-latest-interstellar-visitor-to-make-its-way-to-our-solar-system-is-challenging-cosmic-norms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3I\/ATLAS<\/a> that reveal a new feature: the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/the-more-astronomers-watch-interstellar-comet-3i-atlas-the-weirder-it-gets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fastest comet ever observed<\/a> has now <a href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/news\/noirlab2525\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grown a tail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new observations add to the growing body of evidence that supports 3I\/ATLAS\u2019s identity as an interstellar comet, amid speculations that include whether the object could represent a probe or other <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/could-alien-technosignatures-be-detected-from-interstellar-objects-like-3i-atlas-these-astronomers-say-its-possible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technological artifact<\/a> produced by an intelligent alien civilization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Tail and a Glowing Coma<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The discovery of the comet\u2019s tail was made during analysis of images obtained <a href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/news\/noirlab2525\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by the Gemini South telescope<\/a>, located in the Chilean Andes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the comet\u2019s gassy tail, the images also showed 3I\/ATLAS\u2019s glowing coma, or halo of dust and gas encircling it. As the comet\u2019s icy nucleus warms as it moves closer to the Sun, material on its surface is baked off, producing the coma and tail\u2014both of which are hallmarks of active comets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Probing the Chemistry of an Interstellar Visitor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In their recent studies, researchers employed the telescope\u2019s Multi-Object Spectrograph to analyze the wavelengths of light emitted by 3I\/ATLAS, which provided details about its chemical composition and how its materials are changing during its passage through the Solar System.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The analysis also clearly showed that the object, which already bore several characteristics commonly associated with comets, now possesses a very comet-like tail.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39378 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/3IATLAS-2.jpg\" alt=\"3I\/ATLAS Gemini \" width=\"650\" height=\"574\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 650px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 650\/574;\"\/>Above: A recent deep image of 3I\/ATLAS, captured by the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on Gemini South at Cerro Pach\u00f3n in Chile, which comprises half of the Gemini Observatory. Zamani (NSF NOIRLab)).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe were excited to see the growth of the tail, suggesting a change in the particles from the previous Gemini images, and we got our first glimpse of the chemistry from the spectrum,\u201d said Karen Meech from the University of Hawai\u2018i Institute for Astronomy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/space\/3i-atlas-comet-interstellar-object-earth-tail-b2828191.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speaking with The Independent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meech added that the recent observations offer crucially important data, in addition to providing a \u201cbreathtaking\u201d view of the mysterious interstellar object as it nears what is expected to be its closest approach to Earth during its journey through our solar system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NASA Weighs In on 3I\/ATLAS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For several weeks, 3I\/ATLAS has garnered attention based on speculations that the object could be more than just a comet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Responding to such speculations, NASA scientist Tom Statler, the Lead Scientist for Solar System Small Bodies in the Planetary Science Division at NASA\u2019s Washington Headquarters, affirmed that all indications currently show that 3I\/ATLAS is indeed merely a comet.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/deep-space-travelers-may-imitate-hibernating-squirrels\/\" class=\"mask-img\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1643788237691_ISS_13301_03290.eps_2732_2048_optimized-120x120.jpg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"squirrels\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has some interesting properties that are a little bit different from our solar system comets, but it behaves like a comet,\u201d Statler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2025\/sep\/11\/interstellar-comet-nasa-alien-made\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently told The Guardian<\/a>. \u201cAnd so the evidence is overwhelmingly pointing to this object being a natural body. It\u2019s a comet.\u201d The Debrief reached out to Statler for additional perspectives on the controversy, but had not received a response as of the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Captivating Interstellar Visitor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/astronomers-are-tracking-a-massive-new-interstellar-object-that-just-entered-our-solar-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Discovered<\/a> on July 1, 2025, 3I\/ATLAS is only <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/nasa-confirms-arrival-of-new-interstellar-object-in-our-solar-system-heres-what-we-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the third confirmed interstellar object<\/a> known to have made its way through our Solar System, following in the wake of a pair of equally unusual space objects, 1I\/\u02bbOumuamua in 2017, and Comet 2I\/Borisov in 2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clocking in with an estimated diameter of around 3.5 miles, 3I\/ATLAS is large, but poses no threat to Earth, and is expected to make its closest pass <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/3i-atlas-is-now-headed-toward-mars-as-mystery-surrounding-interstellar-visitor-grows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on its way past Mars<\/a> next month before it exits our solar system and resumes its interstellar journey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Micah Hanks is the Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder of The Debrief.
