{"id":238509,"date":"2025-09-19T08:45:16","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:45:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/238509\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:45:16","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:45:16","slug":"daniil-medvedev-confirms-how-long-his-trial-run-with-new-coach-thomas-johansson-is-set-to-last","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/238509\/","title":{"rendered":"Daniil Medvedev confirms how long his &#8216;trial run&#8217; with new coach Thomas Johansson is set to last"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Daniil Medvedev made a big coaching move recently in a bid to turn his ATP Tour fortunes around.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After almost a decade together, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/daniil-medvedev-sends-message-to-his-coach-on-instagram-after-announcing-split-following-us-open-exit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medvedev split with Gilles Cervara<\/a> after the US Open.<\/p>\n<p>Replacing him, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/news\/thomas-johanssons-coaching-record-as-he-joins-daniil-medvedevs-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medvedev hired Thomas Johansson on a trial basis<\/a>, bringing in the 2002 Australian Open champion to his team.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" loading=\"lazy\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-2193487536-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Thomas Johansson watches Kei Nishikori play at the 2025 Australian Open\" class=\"wp-image-127916\" \/>Photo by Kelly Defina\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The pair will begin their coaching relationship at the Hangzhou Open, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/daniil-medvedev\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medvedev<\/a> set to play Nishesh Basavareddy in round one.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking ahead of the tournament, the former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP<\/a> world number one has shared how long his \u2018trial\u2019 with Johansson is set to last.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas Johansson will coach Daniil Medvedev until at least the end of 2025<\/p>\n<p>During a pre-tournament press conference, Medvedev shared the details of his coaching relationship with the 50-year-old Swede.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time in my career, I was without a coach. I talked to a lot of people, asked how they saw my tennis, how I could improve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of the experts I called were not available, and some did not have a vision that I liked. We trained for a week and a half in Monte Carlo, and it was great. So far, everything is going well. I hope it will show in the tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have agreed to a trial run until the end of the year, and then we will see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Medvedev is set to play several tournaments in Asia (indoor)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<p>Daniil Medvedev\u2019s 2025 schedule<\/p>\n<p>The 2020 champion is unlikely to qualify for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP Finals<\/a> in Turin, an event he hasn\u2019t missed since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Medvedev currently sits 22nd in the race, trailing eighth-placed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/lorenzo-musetti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lorenzo Musetti<\/a> by 1,300 points.<\/p>\n<p>Any realistic hopes of qualifying for the event were dashed at the US Open, when Medvedev\u2019s disastrous Grand Slam campaign drew to a close.<\/p>\n<p>After winning 18 Grand Slam matches in 2024, he won just one in 2025 and has now lost in the
