But in the summer of 1943, Dora remained his principal model,\u201d Sevestre-Barb\u00e9 said in an essay published online by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lucienparis.com\/en\/sale\/169264-pablo-picasso-un-chef-doeuvre-retrouve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">auction house Lucien Paris<\/a>, which is selling the painting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqrvm12000e3d5t8dnp330o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The newly discovered portrait of Maar was acquired in 1944 by an unnamed collector and has remained in his family ever since. \u201cTo our knowledge, it has never been exhibited nor appeared at auction,\u201d Sevestre-Barb\u00e9 said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqrvm12000f3d5t8m6mm902@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is expected to sell for at least $9.45 million, according to Reuters news agency. CNN has approached Lucien Paris for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqtivuf00183d5to9oqwtmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dutch art historian Arthur Brand told CNN on Friday that he expects the painting to sell for a higher price than estimates suggest.<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqsyd18000y3d5txsvvf07s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPicasso, as we all know, is one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, and so every time something like this pops up it\u2019s exciting,\u201d Brand said. \u201cSometimes paintings have been in the same family for decades, in this case since 1944.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqt4vps00113d5ttb5jz77w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brand, an art crime investigator who has recovered more than 200 works of art, including ones by Picasso, said the depiction of Maar in the painting \u201cgives a more sad impression\u201d than some of his earlier portraits of her, adding: \u201cIt seems like she is crying.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqt8flv00153d5tsfch0qdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several factors could have influenced this somber tone. Not only had the pair\u2019s relationship \u201cmore or less ended,\u201d Brand said, but at the time of painting the Nazis were still occupying Paris.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqtnjf6001f3d5t3rnqnk00@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPicasso probably was worried that he would never be able to sell or exhibit again, so maybe his own sadness is also reflected in this painting,\u201d Brand added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqrkh6a00003d5tjua7ep7c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Picasso painted Maar many times, most famously in the guise of the \u201cWeeping Woman\u201d in 1937 \u2013 a work that powerfully conveys the emotional impact of the Spanish Civil War \u2013 but also \u201cPortrait of Dora Maar\u201d (1937) and \u201cDora Maar au Chat\u201d (1941).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqs1hmc000o3d5tas88khle@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Born Henriette Theodora Markovitch in 1907, Maar grew up between Argentina and France.
