Mayor Eric Adams praised New York Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs on Friday for defiantly refusing to endorse socialist Zohran Mamdani<\/a> \u2014 a stance that highlighted a deep rift in the party.<\/p>\n

Adams, in a pointed statement backing Jacobs and decrying the party\u2019s leftward swing, also took clear aim at Gov. Kathy Hochul for her shocking endorsement of Mamdani<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n

Without naming Hochul, Adams \u2014 who is polling nearly 40 points behind Mamdani in the November mayoral race \u2014 bitterly complained about the \u201ctroubling\u201d support the radical Democratic nominee has received.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt a time when our party must be focused on safety, opportunity, and keeping New York strong, it is deeply troubling to see support given to Zohran Mamdani \u2014 a politician whose reckless rhetoric and dangerous policies threaten to divide our communities,\u201d said Adams, a Democrat running as an independent.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Mamdani\u2019s refusal to embrace the internationally recognized IHRA definition of antisemitism, his past tolerance of extremist slogans, and his radical economic vision are not just out of step with mainstream Democrats \u2014 they are harmful to the very values that make New York strong.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor applauded Jacobs\u2019 \u201cindependence\u201d and offered his full support for him staying on as chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cJay Jacobs\u2019 leadership is critical to keeping the Democratic Party rooted in common sense, rejecting the march toward socialism, and ensuring that extremists do not hijack our values,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n

Jacobs\u2019 non-endorsement of Mamdani represented a highly unusual rupture between the state Democratic Party\u2019s chair and governor over who should lead New York City \u2014 and laid bare Dems\u2019 divides over the party\u2019s overall direction.<\/p>\n

Sources have said that Jacobs, a moderate and strong supporter of Israel, considered resigning after Hochul blindsided him by endorsing Mamdani.<\/p>\n

The move aligns Jacobs with many in the party, including his fellow Long Island Democrats Reps. Tom Suozzi and Laura Gillen, who oppose Mamdani\u2019s criticism of Israel and unapologetic socialism both on principle and as potentially alienating for moderate New York voters.<\/p>\n

Hochul acknowledged her disagreements with Mamdani as she endorsed him, but argued his focus on affordability and potential to fight President Trump<\/a> made him the clear pick.<\/p>\n

Insiders noted her support of Mamdani could help her gain credibility among progressives<\/a> as she faces a primary challenge from her left flank in next year\u2019s gubernatorial primary.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s electoral rival Andrew Cuomo, who as governor had appointed Jacobs to his post in 2019, said he couldn\u2019t recall a time when the Democrats\u2019 chair crossed the governor on endorsing a Big Apple mayoral nominee.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt clarifies the situation,\u201d Cuomo said Thursday during a campaign event in Staten Island. \u201cThe Democratic Party chairman did not endorse Mamdani \u2014 why? Because he is not a Democrat.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is a socialist. He is a socialist who ran and won in a Democratic primary. Socialists and Democrats are apples and oranges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamdani has energized Democratic voters in New York City. Matthew McDermott<\/p>\n

Mamdani thoroughly trounced Cuomo<\/a> in the June primary, winning more voters than any New York City Dem in more than 30 years.<\/p>\n

Many Empire State Democrats have long been unhappy with Jacobs\u2019 leadership, arguing his mild-mannered approach failed to fire up voters and blaming him for the party\u2019s poor showing in the 2022 midterm elections.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

His failure to get behind Mamdani, the party\u2019s nominee who has proven a phenom at energizing voters, is only the latest gripe many Dems have against him.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisgraceful. The Chair of the Democratic Party refusing to support the candidate clearly selected by the voters of the Democratic Party,\u201d state Sen. Michael Gianaris posted on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he won\u2019t perform that most basic responsibility of a party leader, what exactly is he doing over there?\u201d<\/p>\n

One party source pointed out that some in the party were already annoyed with Jacobs, believing that him spending his summer running summer camps shows he lacks the energetic focus to lead and win.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a huge group that isn\u2019t on his side that thinks he\u2019s a weak leader,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n
