Fed Chair Jerome Powell in a news conference described it as a \u201crisk management cut,\u201d suggesting the Fed isn\u2019t behind the curve.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqqwfkb000k3b6nvjjr06hd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Miran, however, disagrees. He was the lone dissenter on the Fed\u2019s latest decision, favoring a large, half-point cut instead. His appointment has brought a new voice to the Fed \u2014 one with unconventional views on the economy \u2014 in support of aggressive rate cuts in the months ahead.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqr72e5000m3b6n3tb69t25@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an interview with CNBC Friday morning, Miran played the down the potential impact from Trump\u2019s tariffs, basing that as his main argument for why he backed a half-point cut, while mentioning the precarious state of the job market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqxso91000q3b6nqjd9fghs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t see any material inflation from tariffs,\u201d Miran said, adding that the longer that borrowing costs \u201cstay very restrictive\u201d means \u201cthe greater the risks build up\u2026 to the employment mandate.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqtafid00123b6n95ng23en@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Miran, Trump\u2019s top economic adviser, was sworn in an hour before the Fed\u2019s meeting began on Tuesday, he told CNBC, after Republicans swiftly shepherded his confirmation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqzj961000u3b6n4w467xli@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Whenever a Fed governor dissents, they typically release a statement through the central bank two days later laying out their rationale, but Miran is choosing to detail his reasoning at an upcoming speech in New York on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqzjzds000x3b6nw9k4eodk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The newly appointed Fed governor is getting settled in, he said, telling CNBC: \u201cI literally just got here a few days ago.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqzu6ri00153b6nf2x53wtu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Miran said that Trump called him the day he was sworn in to congratulate him, adding that the president didn\u2019t ask him to \u201ccommit to doing any particular actions.\u201d Miran reiterated that he will form independent opinions about the economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqzuqzv00183b6n6afh97yo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEverybody was extremely welcoming\u201d at the Fed after he was sworn in, Miran said, despite the unprecedented pressure Trump continues to exert on the central bank, including an ongoing push to oust Fed Governor Lisa Cook.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfr012df001b3b6nzy8t2cnd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt was a very collegial environment, and I really appreciated that, and that includes Governor Cook,\u201d Miran said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfr04eve001e3b6nqn0h36ks@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Monday, Miran is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at a luncheon hosted by the Economic Club of New York, during which he will \u201cgive a full accounting for my economic views and walk through in meticulous detail the economics and the arithmetic behind getting to those numbers.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfr052ga001h3b6n8yswff9y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Fed officials released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/federal-reserve-interest-rate-09-17-25#cmfobee5j00003b6olxc9k10r\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">their latest so-called dot plot<\/a> on Wednesday \u2014 a graph of their projections for their benchmark lending rate in the coming years \u2014 there was one projection that was far below the other estimates for 2025, suggesting that person estimates aggressive rate cuts by the end of the year. Miran confirmed that dot was his.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfr07m59001k3b6nyygkp87e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat was me,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        The US labor market and the Fed<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqqfmd1000a3b6n332oa1vr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n             By many measures, America\u2019s labor market has weakened since the beginning of the year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqwrdvl000a3b6nx9ere8oa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Job growth has been<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/05\/economy\/us-jobs-report-august-final\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> anemic<\/a>; there are now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/03\/economy\/us-jolts-job-openings-layoffs-july\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more unemployed people seeking work<\/a> than there are job openings; and in August, the number of people unemployed for more than 26 weeks reached its highest level since November 2021.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqra7ck000p3b6nvh9d1y0f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But those signs ultimately weren\u2019t enough to prompt the Fed to deliver the half-point cut Miran voted for. Powell told reporters that while the labor market has softened, it\u2019s not all doom and gloom.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqsaj93000u3b6nnrivbk7o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLet\u2019s remember though, the unemployment rate\u2019s 4.3%. The economy is growing at 1.5%. So it\u2019s not a bad economy, or anything like that,\u201d Powell said \u201cWe\u2019ve seen much more challenging economic times.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqsc53k000x3b6nbeawn5r4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Powell has frequently referred to the importance of the unemployment rate in policymakers\u2019 perception of the labor market. Last year when the Fed delivered a large, half-point cut, it was mostly in response to the fast increase in unemployment over a short period of time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfqwyrmd000f3b6nb4bu7bt9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s not the case this time around.
