The city is reviewing a letter from the Trump administration threatening to pull funding<\/a> over guidelines regarding transgender students, officials said Friday \u2014 as Mayor Eric Adams continued railing against mixed-gender bathrooms.<\/p>\n

City Hall was \u201creviewing the letter and our options,\u201d spokeswoman Kayla Mamelak Altus said in a statement, adding the Adams administration was working toward making city public schools \u201cplaces where every child feels safe\u201d to learn and grow.<\/p>\n

It came after Adams was asked during a campaign event about the Tuesday letter from the feds, and whether it was connected to his rant against allowing \u201clittle girls\u201d to use the same bathrooms as boys.<\/p>\n

Adams, while campaigning in the Bronx on Friday, claimed he had \u201cno idea\u201d what was in the missive from the feds \u2014 as he continued his tirade against co-ed bathrooms<\/a> in response to socialist mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani\u2019s pro-trans policies.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not quite sure why people think it\u2019s all right for a young man in high school to go into a shower where young girls are. I mean, that just doesn\u2019t make any sense to me. It\u2019s not safe,\u201d Adams told reporters.<\/p>\n

Hizzoner said his takes were in direct response to Mamdani\u2019s progressive platform. The Queens assemblyman has not explicitly made comments on school restrooms, though his campaign platform does include $65 million in public funding<\/a> for health and other services for transgender New Yorkers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe people fully understand what he stands for,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n

When pressed about the missive sent to the city Department of Education, he claimed, \u201cI haven\u2019t read the letter. I don\u2019t know what\u2019s in it. I have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mamelak Altus later clarified that while the mayor hadn\u2019t reviewed the letter himself \u2014 members of his administration were looking it over before coming to him with recommendations. <\/p>\n

US Education Department Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor, in the letter, wrote he was \u201cdeeply concerned <\/a>about NYC DOE\u2019s Guidelines to Support Transgender and Gender Expansive Students,\u201d claiming the policy could amount to a violation of non-trans students\u2019 civil rights.<\/p>\n

Adams first brought up the bathroom matter<\/a> on the campaign trail Wednesday, as he railed against Mamdani and his Democratic Socialists of America pals, declaring he won\u2019t \u201csuccumb\u201d to letting girls and boys share the same facilities. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

He then doubled down Thursday during an unrelated briefing outside United Nations headquarters, saying he\u2019d look into whether he had the authority to change the schools policy, which currently reads, \u201cStudents must be provided access to facilities consistent with their gender identity asserted at school.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAwful and dangerous to hear the Mayor echo the transphobic bigotry coming from the Trump administration,\u201d he said in a post on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s completely at odds with the values of our city, and another reason why his single, disgraced term in office cannot end soon enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite disavowing mixed-gender restrooms in schools \u2014 Adams on Friday praised city restaurants that have single-use stalls for both genders.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you go to the restaurant, you see a symbol on the door that a man or woman can use the restaurant facilities,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
