That year, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/the-beatles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beatles<\/a> played their monumental show at Shea Stadium, performed for the last time on the Ed Sullivan Show, and capped off the year by releasing Rubber Soul. That year, <a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/john-lennon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Lennon<\/a>\u00a0also bought a Swiss-Made KB Discomatic. A personal, portable playlist, Lennon filled the antediluvian music box with 40 of his favorite 45s to keep him \u201ccompany\u201d on tour with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/the-beatles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Beatles<\/a>. Lennon\u2019s selection of singles highlighted his diverse musical tastes, spanning rock, R&amp;B, folk, pop, Motown, and blues.<\/p>\n<p>Lennon\u2019s analog \u201cplaylist\u201d featured Bob Dylan, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Paul Revere &amp; the Raiders, and The Lovin\u2019 Spoonful, among many more, including the Beatles 1962 tourmate Gary U.S. Bonds\u2019 1960 song \u201cNew Orleans\u201d and No. 1 \u201cQuarter to Three,\u201d\u00a0from 1961,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>R&amp;B singer\u00a0Fontella Bass\u2019s 1965 hit \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=x7BeGDZewHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rescue Me<\/a>,\u201d the Animals\u2019 \u201cBring It On Home to Me,\u201d and even opens on Wilson Pickett\u2019s \u201cIn the Midnight Hour.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Lennon also pointed out the five Smokey Robinson and the Miracles songs on his list. The Miracles  appear on the Discomatic more than any other artist and were a significant influence on the Beatles, who covered the group\u2019s 1962 hit \u201cYou Really Got a Hold on Me\u201d\u00a0on\u00a0With the Beatles. \u201cThat\u2019s me trying to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/tag\/smokey-robinson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Smokey Robinson<\/a>\u00a0again,\u201d said Lennon in his\u00a0Jukebox\u00a0notes, likening The Beatles\u2019 1963 hit \u201cAll My Loving\u201d to something Robinson would have composed. <\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" data-expand=\"600\" viewbox=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/John-Lennons-Jukebox-2004.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload wp-image-9004111231593213\"\/>\u2018John Lennon\u2019s Jukebox\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In 1989, the old jukebox resurfaced at a Christie\u2019s auction and was sold to the Bristol music producer John Midwinter for \u00a32,500 (approximately $2,770). Midwinter spent years restoring and researching the 45s that Lennon personally placed inside.
