It was Waxahachie’s first win over Duncanville after four consecutive losses.

But Duncanville (1-1, 0-1), who had a bye last week and had played in only one game this season, had to shake off the rust.

Waxahachie’s Zaeden Smith returned the opening kickoff 78 yards to reach the Duncanville 11. Quarterback Jerry Meyer II capped off the drive with a 11-yard touchdown pass to running back Taylen Furlough-Strange, who put Waxahachie (3-0, 1-0) on the board early.

But Duncanville answered quickly when quarterback Maximus The Great Denson threw a 77-yard dime to Trenton Yancey for a score.

But Waxahachie blocked the extra point attempt and Braylon Davis returned the block 92 yards for a safety with 4:26 remaining in the first quarter and a 9-6 lead.

Following its early miscues, Duncanville took over from there. Behind Brayden Arnold’s running game, including a 12-yard rush into the end zone, Duncanville took its first lead of the night.

Then, with 1:54 remaining in the first, Duncanville’s Victor Lincoln intercepted the ball and returned it for 35 yards to push the team to a 20-9 lead that stood until halftime.

To open the third quarter, Denson threw another long ball to Theus for an 85-yard touchdown. Waxahachie put itself back in the game seconds later behind running back Jordan Smith’s 77-yard kickoff return to close the gap to 27-15 with 11:28 remaining in the third.

In the fourth quarter, Waxahachie continued to cut into the lead, refusing to relent. Meyer sent a 24-yard pass to a wide open Jordan Thompson-Woods to put Waxahachie within five.

With 3:52 remaining, Waxahachie pushed to the Duncanville 1. Then, Nolan Barnard battled into the end zone for the score to take a 28-27 lead.

On Duncanville’s ensuing drive, the team made it to the Waxahachie 29 before being stopped on fourth-and-2.

Waxahachie will look to stay in the win column next week against DeSoto as Duncanville hopes to rebound against Skyline.

Click or tap here for the box score.
