And in one place in particular \u2014 Washington Heights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">This historic neighborhood of Upper Manhattan is named for <strong>George Washington<\/strong>, who led the Continental Army in an early, pivotal battle here during the Revolutionary War. <\/p>\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size\">But this place is also named for its Heights, the highest elevation in Manhattan, which gives the modern neighborhood a unique feel, with rolling hills and avenues.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boweryboyshistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-18-at-11.04.17-AM.png\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-18-at-11.04.17-AM-1024x666.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28605\"  \/><\/a>Image courtesy CUNY Dominican Studies Institute<\/p>\n<p>Today, many call it \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.littledominicanrepublic.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">little Dominican Republic<\/a>,\u201d home to the largest Dominican neighborhood in the United States (although more Dominicans live in the Bronx overall). <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s here that Dominican and Puerto Rican culture blend as well \u2014 from the shops and restaurants to the famous bodegas \u2014 alongside other Latin influences and the vestiges of groups who lived here before \u2014 Jewish, Irish, African-American.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boweryboyshistory.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_4282.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/IMG_4282-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28606\"  \/><\/a>Taino mural by <a href=\"https:\/\/zuckermaninstitute.columbia.edu\/dister-rondon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dister Rondon<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Greg and Tom explore the unique relationship between the Dominican Republic and New York City \u2014 and believe it or not, this story begins before the founding of New Amsterdam! It also includes the story of a particular plaza in lower Manhattan, dedicated to Juan Pablo Duarte, the \u2018founding father of the Dominican Republic\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Starting in the 1960s, thousands of Dominicans immigrated to the United States \u2014 and most to New York City.
