A critical incident has been declared after a 60-year-old man died during an arrest following a domestic violence assault in Sydney’s south west.<\/p>\n
Police were called to a home on Bligh Avenue in Lurnea, about 4:05pm on Friday, to find a 58-year-old woman seriously injured.<\/p>\n
The man, who police allege to be the woman’s husband, fled and was later arrested at a nearby address on Spica Street in Sadleir.<\/p>\n

Acting Assistant Commissioner Trent King said the man was being treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics after taking prohibited drugs.<\/p>\n
“The man was handcuffed for a short period of time; there was no force from the information I have at this stage,” he said.<\/p>\n
“As his health declined, the handcuffs were removed at the request of ambulance staff so they could continue treatment.”<\/p>\n
He was taken to Westmead Hospital for further treatment and died a short time later.<\/p>\n
Police said the woman was taken to Liverpool Hospital with serious head injuries.<\/p>\n
A weapon was found at the scene, Acting Assistant Commissioner King said.<\/p>\n
Police declared a critical incident to be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission and Professional Standards Command.<\/p>\n
A report will be prepared for the coroner.<\/p>\n

In a separate incident, a man has been arrested over the death of a woman in Mullumbimby.<\/p>\n
Police were called to a unit on Poinciana Street about 11:55pm on Friday following reports of a domestic incident.<\/p>\n
A woman aged in her 20s was found deceased inside, and a 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene.<\/p>\n
She is yet to be formally identified.<\/p>\n
