New York- and California-based groups representing writers are backing \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d in what they see as a defense not of a comedy show but the United States Constitution.<\/p>\n
The Dramatists Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America East and West issued statements condemning The Federal Communications Commission and the American Broadcasting Company regarding the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/p>\n
The Dramatists Guild and Writers Guild of America East, both based in New York, as well as the Los Angeles-based Writers Guild of America West said they support the Kimmel, the show\u2019s writers and the show, which is done in California.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe condemn any and all threats against freedom of speech made by the current administration and the FCC chair,\u201d the Dramatists Guild Foundation said in a written statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Guild condemned FCC threats to pull ABC\u2019s broadcasting license because \u201cthey don\u2019t like what was said on the public airwaves\u201d as well as a \u201cmajor media company\u201d choosing to \u201cbow down to such an abuse of authority. \u201c<\/p>\n
The Dramatists Guild said it is \u201cbuilt on the principle of the writers\u2019 full creative freedom and agency\u201d as well as the \u201c1st Amendment rights guaranteed to everyone in the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Writers Guild of America East and West said they oppose \u201cthe abuse of governmental power\u201d as well as \u201cacts of corporate cowardice.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
\u201cThe right to speak our minds and to disagree with each other \u2013 to disturb, even \u2013 is at the very heart of what it means to be a free people,\u201d the two Guilds said in a statement. \u201cIf free speech applied only to ideas we like, we needn\u2019t have bothered to write it into the Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Writers Guilds added, \u201cAs for our employers, our words have made you rich,\u201d adding, \u201cSilencing us impoverishes the whole world.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
ABC suspended the show indefinitely after Kimmel commented regarding the MAGA movement and the assassination of Charlie Kirk.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened ABC for comments Kimmel made during his monologue that Carr said were not in the public interest, as required for broadcast licensees.<\/p>\n
Carr said the FCC has a \u201cstrong case for holding Kimmel, ABC and network parent Walt Disney Co. accountable for spreading misinformation.\u201d\n<\/p>\n
He said Kimmel \u201cappeared to be making an intentional effort to mislead the public that Kirk\u2019s assassin was a right-wing Trump supporter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Nexstar ABC affiliate owner said it would not broadcast the program for the \u201cforeseeable future,\u201d triggering ABC\u2019s decision to suspend the program.\n<\/p>\n
The hour-long show, which debuted in 2003, was suspended after more than 3,500 episodes including some shot in Kimmel\u2019s home during the Covid pandemic.<\/p>\n
Jimmy Kimmel Live! is the second longest running late-night TV show, based on a host, following only The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.\n<\/p>\n
