The US attorney investigating mortgage fraud allegations<\/a> against New York state Attorney General Letitia James didn\u2019t resign, he was fired, President Trump declared on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

Erik Siebert, the top prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, told staff he resigned Friday amid reports he was facing pressure from the Trump administration over the James probe<\/a>, which has yet to result in criminal charges.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cToday I withdrew the Nomination of Erik Siebert as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, when I was informed that he received the UNUSUALLY STRONG support of the two absolutely terrible, sleazebag Democrat Senators, from the Great State of Virginia,\u201d Trump posted<\/a> on Truth Social, just after midnight Saturday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump says he withdrew Siebert\u2019s nomination after the prosecutor received support from two Democratic senators. mediaite<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t quit, I fired him!\u201d the president asserted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNext time let him go in as a Democrat, not a Republican,\u201d Trump added. \u201cThank you for your attention to this matter.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Siebert, whom Trump nominated in May, had yet to be confirmed by the Senate. He announced his resignation after the president made clear he no longer wanted the prosecutor around.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI want him out,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Friday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump said he changed his mind on nominating Siebert after he learned that Virginia\u2019s two Democratic senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, had expressed support for him.<\/p>\n

Trump nominated Siebert in May but he had not yet been confirmed by the Senate. AP<\/p>\n

\u201cI have other people, judges, and I have US attorneys for other states where I have the same situation. And they can\u2019t get approved. So when I learned that they voted for him, I said, \u2018I don\u2019t really want him.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Siebert emailed his team in the Eastern District \u2013 after Trump\u2019s Oval Office remarks \u2013 that he had turned in his resignation paperwork, according to multiple<\/a> outlets<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis evening, I submitted my resignation as Interim U.S. Attorney for [Eastern District of Virginia],\u201d Siebert wrote. \u201cFor the last eight months, I have had the pleasure of leading the finest and most exceptional of DOJ employees who care deeply about our nation and our EDVA community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for the lessons you have taught me, the sacrifices you have made, and the pursuit of justice you strive for every day,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Siebert had reportedly been under pressure from the Trump administration related to the Tish James mortgage fraud probe. Robert Miller<\/p>\n

In April, Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte requested that the FBI open an investigation into James over allegations of mortgage fraud<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pulte alleged James \u201cfalsified records\u201d to obtain favorable loans on a home she purchased in 2023 in Virginia and a Brooklyn brownstone she\u2019s owned since 2001.<\/p>\n

James allegedly indicated the Norfolk, Va. home would be her \u201cprincipal residence\u201d while acting as state attorney general.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She has dismissed the allegations as \u201cbaseless\u201d and \u201cpart of a \u201crevenge tour\u201d by Trump because she brought civil fraud charges against him and his company, the Trump Organization.<\/p>\n

Siebert had been weighing potential charges against James and was due to meet Monday with Justice Department Special Attorney Ed Martin to discuss the status of the case, a source familiar told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n
