{"id":241861,"date":"2025-09-20T16:44:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T16:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/241861\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T16:44:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T16:44:19","slug":"minister-slams-extremist-candidates-nominating-for-wa-council-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/241861\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister slams &#8216;extremist&#8217; candidates nominating for WA council elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A West Australian minister has condemned the emergence of &#8220;extremist&#8221; candidates nominating for the state&#8217;s forthcoming council elections, as the state premier backs compulsory voting reform.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\"><strong>Warning: This story contains material some readers may find offensive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">With under a third of eligible voters casting a ballot during the state&#8217;s most recent local government elections, concern is growing that more extreme and single-issue candidates will use the small number of votes required to capture easily winnable council seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Several of those candidates have already drawn criticism for inflammatory rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Busselton, self-described <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-09-11\/busselton-council-candidate-stands-by-racist-comments\/102840138\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/102840138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;racist, sexist, democracy-scorning whites-lover<\/a>&#8221; Stephen Wells advocates for a return of the White Australia policy, while further south in Albany, Tamara Frewen, one of several candidates running on a self-described &#8220;anti-woke&#8221; platform, has come under fire for comparing the local pride group to Nazis on social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Wells told the ABC he did not consider his views as extremist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I consider our current politicians extremists who project their own sins onto people with traditional views, like my own, to try and distract people from their own evil,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But regardless of what any politician thinks or pretends to think about my views, they should trust the Australian public to decide these things for themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Frewen said she strongly rejected the claim that she had compared Albany Pride to the Holocaust or Nazi ideology.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A post saying &quot;if you want to follow history spot the difference&quot; next to a composite photo comparing pride and Nazi banners.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/e89651d4c446a2533e5df863c11f9e29\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A comment made by Tamara Frewen on a Facebook post by news outlet Out In Perth. (AAP: Richard Wainwright)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, Notre Dame University political analyst Martin Drum said the disruption caused by single-issue candidates could still emerge under a compulsory system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The problem with single-issue candidacy is that when you are elected you are expected to collaborate and work effectively with the other council members on a whole range of issues,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;So if you are just focused on one single issue and have strong views on that, does that bode well for that kind of work? (ABC News: Andrew O&#8217;Connor)<\/p>\n<p>Uncompetitive councils a concern<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Drum said the number of councils without any election, or candidates, at all was a greater concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When nominations closed earlier this month, 143 candidates were elected automatically, while 10 councils did not have enough candidates to fill the available seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Those local governments will now go to extraordinary elections for those seats, with a date to be set by the local government and the Western Australian Electoral Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">If at the close of nominations there are still not enough candidates to fill the vacancies, the council \u2014 by an absolute majority \u2014 can appoint someone to the position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It shows that there&#8217;s not sufficient interest \u2026 in running for council and it also means that voters are not having a choice,&#8221; Professor Drum said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Both higher turnout and a stronger field of candidates were put forward as potential ways to improve the recently-dismissed Port Hedland council, which this term had a sitting councillor travel to Russia to <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-04-23\/adrian-mcrae-no-confidence-vote-russian-election\/103744606\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/103744606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorse Vladimir Putin&#8217;s election<\/a>, among <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-10-14\/wa-council-port-hedland-approves-anti-covid-vaccine-motion\/104471064\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/104471064\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other controversies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The desire for more candidates has been met in some communities, with the City of Busselton recording its biggest field in a quarter of a century, the City of Albany its third-highest in history, and Derby West Kimberley tripling the number of potential councillors on the ballot from previous elections.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An aerial shot of Derby, WA.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/cb6cffe39c9b5a168c6808ec6945769d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Voters in Derby will choose from one of the town&#8217;s largest fields of council candidates in recent memory.
