{"id":241998,"date":"2025-09-20T18:01:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T18:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/241998\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T18:01:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T18:01:15","slug":"norfolk-chapel-in-karrakatta-cemetery-reopens-after-accused-firebug-caused-1m-worth-of-damage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/241998\/","title":{"rendered":"Norfolk Chapel in Karrakatta Cemetery reopens after accused firebug caused $1m worth of damage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The Norfolk Chapel in Karrakatta Cemetery has reopened to the public after a woman allegedly lit it on fire in a string of arson attacks last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The chapel at WA\u2019s biggest cemetery had been closed for nearly a year after a fire in the chapel on October 1, causing an estimated $1 million in damages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">Tianna Addison Diodato Day was accused over the attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">It was later alleged that the 28-year-old had also set fire to a shed at Lakes Lawn Cemetery in Parklands, northeast of Mandurah, just days prior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">She has pleaded guilty to four charges. Credit: Facebook\/Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The chapel was re-opened on September 12 and services resumed on September 15.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The Metropolitan Cemeteries Board said it had undergone a significant restoration program to ensure it continued to provide a \u201cdignified, comfortable, and welcoming environment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">This included repairs to structural and roof elements, updated seating and lighting, and new interiors that remained respectful to its original design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The chapel\u2019s condolence lounge now has a redesigned welcoming space, improving accessibility needs, as well as upgraded fire and safety systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-9cqv6l-StyledPNParagraph e8utp6u0\">The chapel was opened in 1991 and seats 96 people and another 114 standing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/10f999e94b75691d9fa13bb63b7643dc45a0ebce.jpg\" alt=\"The aftermath of the fire that destroyed the Norfolk Chapel.\" class=\"css-16r7l45-StyledImage en5ut4d0\"\/>Camera IconThe aftermath of the fire that destroyed the Norfolk Chapel.
