A subindex on expectations for the future dropped 16 points to 123, the lowest since last September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">That\u2019s as crop prices have plunged from their 2022 peak, while production costs remain near record highs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Last month, the NCGA called on Congress and the Trump administration to boost demand, including via higher blends of ethanol and increased foreign market access, as it sounded the alarm on an <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/30\/rural-america-economic-crisis-farmers-agriculture-exports-trump-trade-war-china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201ceconomic crisis hitting rural America.\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u201ceconomic crisis hitting rural America.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">Meanwhile, export demand has suffered amid President Donald Trump\u2019s trade war, which has hit certain crops especially hard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/soygrowers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/8-19-25-ASA-Letter-to-President-Trump-on-China-FINAL-1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:American Soybean Association sent a letter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">American Soybean Association sent a letter<\/a> to Trump last month, warning that \u201cU.S. soybean farmers are standing at a trade and financial precipice.\u201d With harvest season near, China hasn\u2019t purchased any U.S. soybeans for the months ahead, it added, despite being the top buyer historically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">The group said U.S. soybean farmers cannot survive a prolonged trade dispute with China and urged Trump to prioritize soybeans in talks with Beijing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">But on Friday, Trump didn\u2019t mention anything about agricultural exports after a call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Prices for soybeans, corn and wheat all fell yesterday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">To be sure, U.S. farmers are set to receive substantial help. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act that was signed in July included about $66 billion in agriculture-focused spending. The vast majority, about $59 billion, is earmarked for farm safety-net enhancements, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fb.org\/market-intel\/one-big-beautiful-bill-act-final-agricultural-provisions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to the American Farm Bureau Federation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">according to the American Farm Bureau Federation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">And Trump is weighing a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/30\/rural-america-economic-crisis-farmers-agriculture-exports-trump-trade-war-china\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:bailout program for farmers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">bailout program for farmers<\/a> that would use tariff income, Agriculture Secretary Brooke <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/rollins\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Rollins;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Rollins<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0267b431-2ec9-4ca4-9d5c-5abf61f2b082\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:told the Financial Times;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">told the Financial Times<\/a> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">American Soybean Association CEO Stephen Censky told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agweb.com\/news\/policy\/ag-economy\/ag-lender-warns-farm-finances-under-greatest-stress-1980s\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Farm Journal\u2019s AgWeb;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Farm Journal\u2019s AgWeb<\/a> on Friday that government assistance gets \u201ccapitalized\u201d over the longer term, meaning payments offer limited overall relief for farmers who subsequently see rents and other costs go up too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yf-1090901\">\u201cIt\u2019s tough, and I can hear it in the stress in our members\u2019 voices. Our members and our board of directors are really concerned right now,\u201d Censky, who served as deputy agriculture secretary in Trump\u2019s first term, said. \u201cSome say if things don\u2019t turn around, if we don\u2019t get markets back or if we get economic assistance \u2014 which is not our first choice \u2014 this could be their last year in farming.
