{"id":243387,"date":"2025-09-21T07:41:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-21T07:41:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/243387\/"},"modified":"2025-09-21T07:41:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-21T07:41:18","slug":"eddie-garcia-sworn-in-as-fort-worths-police-chief","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/243387\/","title":{"rendered":"Eddie Garcia sworn in as Fort Worth\u2019s police chief"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tEddie Garcia, the former Dallas Police Chief, started his role as the Fort Worth\u2019s Police Chief Sept. 17.<\/p>\n<p>During the Fort Worth City Council <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthgov.granicus.com\/player\/clip\/5953?view_id=9&amp;redirect=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meeting<\/a> Sept. 16, the longtime law enforcement officer was sworn in as the city\u2019s 28th police chief.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today is the beginning of a new chapter,&#8221; Garcia said. &#8220;Together, with determination, courage and unity, we&#8217;ll honor the past, meet the challenges of today and build a safer tomorrow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they\u2019re saying<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The two council members for northeast Fort Worth, District 4\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortworthtexas.gov\/government\/elected-officials\/charles-lauersdorf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charlie Lauersdorf <\/a>and District 10\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortworthtexas.gov\/government\/elected-officials\/alan-blaylock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alan Blaylock<\/a>, spoke to the new police chief during council comments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you know that badge may only be a few ounces, but you know how heavy that badge actually is,\u201d Lauersdorf said. \u201cNow, I have no doubt that you will take it serious. I have no doubt that you will honor the city with your leadership. I have no doubt that you will honor the men and women who are willing to put their lives online every single day for all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blaylock said, \u201cI\u2019m very glad to have you. I am so excited for you and for our department. You are walking into a very strong police department. I know you will continue the excellence there and strive for even better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happened<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Garcia was <a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/dallas-fort-worth\/keller-roanoke-northeast-fort-worth\/government\/2025\/08\/22\/fort-worth-names-former-dallas-police-chief-eddie-garcia-citys-28th-police-chief\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> as the next police chief by City Manager Jesus \u201cJay\u201d Chapa\u2019s office Aug. 21. The week prior, the city held a public meet-and-greet at City Hall with three finalists.<\/p>\n<p>The other <a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/dallas-fort-worth\/keller-roanoke-northeast-fort-worth\/government\/2025\/07\/16\/fort-worth-city-manager-announces-4-police-chief-finalists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">finalists<\/a> were Robert Alldredge Jr., the interim police chief for Fort Worth, and Vernon Hale III, the current assistant chief of police for the Prince George&#8217;s County Police Department in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, according to previous reporting.<\/p>\n<p>A fourth finalist, Emada Tingirdes from the Los Angeles Police Department, withdrew her name after getting a promotion in Los Angeles, according to a city news release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you need to know<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Garcia was the assistant city manager in Austin and was the police chief in Dallas from February 2021 to October 2024, commanding the ninth-largest police department in the country, according to the news release. He\u2019s been with the city of Austin since he was hired in September 2024, according to previous reporting.<\/p>\n<p>In Austin, Garcia oversaw the fire department, police department, Austin\/Travis County Emergency Medical Services, chief medical officer, forensic science department, Homeland Security and Emergency Management and labor relations, according to the city website.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia was part of T.C. Broadnax\u2019s staff, who was the former city manager of Dallas. Broadnax was hired as Austin\u2019s city manager May 26, 2024, according to previous Community Impact <a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/austin\/south-central-austin\/government\/2024\/03\/26\/tc-broadnax-chosen-to-be-austins-next-city-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reporting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The background<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Garcia spent 28 years working for the San Jose Police Department in California, the last five as police chief from 2016 to 2021, before going to Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>In Fort Worth, he replaces Neil Noakes, who retired May 31.
