Hakeem Jeffries, the House Democratic Minority leader from Brooklyn, is in discussions to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/04\/us-news\/aoc-takes-dig-at-top-dems-schumer-jeffries-for-not-endorsing-socialist-zohran-mamdani-in-nyc-mayoral-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">endorse lefty Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani<\/a> for mayor, sources said Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth Hakeem and I have been in conversations with Mamdani and [adviser] Patrick Gaspard about a possible endorsement,\u201d Rev. Al Sharpton told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Gaspard, the former ambassador to South Africa and political director to ex President Barack Obama, has emerged as key adviser to Mamdani with key constituencies and business leaders in the city, particularly in the black community.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37170956\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/house-minority-leader-hakeem-jeffries-111543674.jpg\" alt=\"House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries speaking to reporters at the Capitol.\" class=\"wp-image-37170956\"  \/>House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is in talks to endorse socialist Zohran Mamdani for NYC mayor. AP<\/p>\n<p>Jeffries himself teased a potential Mamdani endorsement, when asked about the mayor\u2019s race during an appearance <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/05\/us-news\/andrew-cuomo-meets-with-al-sharpton-to-court-endorsement-as-amid-nyc-mayoral-race\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Al Sharpton\u2019s<\/a> MSNBC\u2019s PoliticsNation show Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cWhat I will say is, as you pointed out, you know, Gov. Hochul endorsed last Sunday. Speaker Carl Heastie endorsed [Mamdani] on Wednesday,\u201d Jeffries said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe got a big endorsement today, you know, from a close friend of mine, the leader of the Congressional Black Caucus, Congresswoman [Yvette] Clarke. Stephen Yang for the New York Post<\/p>\n<p>A source familiar with the deliberations said Jeffries is \u201cleaning towards Mamdani\u201d \u2014 but discussions are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sen. Chuck Schumer has yet to endorse in the mayor\u2019s race, a contest that also includes incumbent Mayor Eric Adams and ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, both Democrats now running as independents.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic socialist Mamdani\u2019s ascendance has caused a major rift among progressives and moderates in the party, which exploded into a full blown war last week after <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/19\/us-news\/eric-adams-praises-ny-dem-boss-for-refusing-to-endorse-zohran-mamdani\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">state Democratic Party chairman Jay Jacobs<\/a>, also the Nassau County Democratic leader, bucked ally Hochul by issuing a statement refusing to endorse the Democratic nominee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mamdani and I are in agreement that America\u2019s greatest problem is the continued growth in income disparity in our nation. On how to address it \u2013 we fundamentally disagree,\u201d Jacobs said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI strongly disagree with his views on the State of Israel, along with certain key policy positions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jacobs continued, \u201cI reject the platform of the so-called Democratic Socialists of America and do not believe that it represents the principles, values or policies of the Democratic Party. For those reasons I will not be endorsing Mr. Mamdani for Mayor of the City of New York.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Rep.
