It\u2019s been quite some time since the Missouri native performed in her home country, with the end of 2024 marking a particularly rough period for her. In addition to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/chappell-roan-cancels-all-things-go-festival-set-1235787117\/\">canceling two <\/a>stateside shows for mental health reasons, she faced onslaughts of backlash for everything from speaking out about <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/chappell-roan-toxic-fans-1235762356\/\">predatory fan behaviors<\/a> to criticizing Kamala Harris amid <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/culture\/politics\/chappell-roan-vote-kamala-harris-not-endorse-1235783903\/\">the presidential race<\/a>, leading to her largely stepping back from the internet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNow, a packed audience dotted with pink cowboy hats and Lady Liberty crowns \u2014 nods to Roan\u2019s getup at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/chappell-roan-turned-down-white-house-invitation-pride-performance-1235705655\/\">2024 Governor\u2019s Ball<\/a>, one of the last times she performed in New York \u2014 embraces her completely, every bump in the road forgotten. Looking out at a sea of arms eagerly forming the shapes of the letters \u201cH-O-T-T-O-G-O\u201d (\u201cI think you get it,\u201d she giggles, abandoning her dance tutorial after one run-through), she looks stronger than ever, strutting around the stage in a sexy Captain Hook-esque outfit without missing a note as flames erupt behind her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSaturday\u2019s concert is the first of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/chappell-roan-2025-us-tour-dates-1236029287\/\">eight pop-up performances<\/a> in the U.S. that Roan has generously tacked onto her European Visions of Damsels &amp; Other Dangerous Things Tour, and one of four dates slated for NYC. The setlist is full of high-octane numbers from her 2023 debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, with \u201cSuper Graphic Ultra Modern Girl,\u201d \u201cFemininomenon,\u201d \u201cAfter Midnight,\u201d \u201cNaked in Manhattan\u201d (\u201cCan you believe it? We\u2019re in New York!\u201d she yells triumphantly midway through), \u201cGuilty Pleasure\u201d and \u201cCasual\u201d preceding \u201cHot to Go!,\u201d as well as new single \u201cThe Subway,\u201d which recently earned Roan her highest-ever peak on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/hot-100\/\">Billboard Hot 100<\/a> at No. 3.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLater in the show, she writhes around on the stage floor while <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DO2PyIcDkXl\/\">covering Heart\u2019s \u201cBarracuda,\u201d<\/a> sensually serenades a mic stand topped with a blonde wig for the waltzy \u201cPicture You,\u201d line dances with her bandmates to March single \u201cThe Giver\u201d and fills up the stadium with impressive high note after high note during \u201cGood Luck, Babe!,\u201d the breakout hit that catapulted the pop singer to superstardom with unprecedented swiftness in spring 2024. The latter two tracks are expected to appear on Roan\u2019s next LP, which she plans to start work on after the tour ends in October. (\u201cIt took me five years to write the first [album], and it\u2019s probably going to take at least five to write the next,\u201d she warned in <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/music\/music-news\/chappell-roan-next-album-years-to-finish-1236035998\/\">a recent interview<\/a> with Vogue.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThough Roan is a total force on stage, polished and magnetic while trouncing around a set made to look like an illustrated fairytale castle, the show is not without her signature frankness. She hilariously breaks character at one point to inform the crowd that she\u2019d totally forgotten her entire \u201ca\u2014s\u201d was on display in her outfit until she was taken by surprise at the sight of her own rear-end on one of the big screens behind her. Toward the end, while singing the vulnerable and now-deeply-ironic \u201cCalifornia\u201d about worrying she\u2019ll never make it in the music business, she interjects, \u201cI just saw someone yawn \u2014 that\u2019s crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe also takes a tender moment to address why her return home is so momentous. \u201cIt\u2019s been quite a year,\u201d she tells the crowd around the halfway point in the show. \u201cI can\u2019t believe we\u2019re here, honestly. It\u2019s crazy. Thank you for sticking with me through it, I know it was \u2026 it\u2019s been really hard.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m so glad I can come to work like this,\u201d she continues. \u201cI just needed a place like this so bad when I was 13, 14. I just wanted to dress up however I wanted, and I wanted to wear makeup and look weird. So I hope you know that you\u2019re welcome here, however you show up today. You are cherished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs Roan dives into \u201cKaleidoscope,\u201d her fans band together to let her know that the feeling is very much mutual. A dazzling rainbow suddenly appears and winks back at her as she sings, with the concert-goers in the back several rows of the stadium holding up multicolored lights in one unified effort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEveryone look behind you,\u201d she instructs the rest of the crowd before momentarily forgetting the song\u2019s lyrics, distracted by the emotionally charged gesture \u2014 the only hiccup in an otherwise flawless show. \u201cYou\u2019ve got the rainbow! It\u2019s a kaleidoscope! It\u2019s so beautiful!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter her stay at Forest Hills, Roan will play two nights in Kansas City before closing out the Visions of Damsels &amp; Other Dangerous Things Tour with two nights in Los Angeles.
