{"id":244837,"date":"2025-09-21T22:00:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-21T22:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/244837\/"},"modified":"2025-09-21T22:00:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-21T22:00:13","slug":"temple-university-hospital-nurses-staff-vote-to-authorize-strike-metro-philadelphia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/244837\/","title":{"rendered":"Temple University Hospital nurses, staff vote to authorize strike \u2013 Metro Philadelphia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0847.jpeg\" class=\"crop-center no-crop wp-post-image\" alt=\"Temple University Hospital strike\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Nurses and professional staff at Temple University Hospital could go on strike as early as Oct. 1. <\/p>\n<p>JACK TOMCZUK \/ METRO FILE<\/p>\n<p>More than 2,600 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.templehealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Temple Health<\/a> nurses and other medical professionals could strike as soon as next week, after union members voted overwhelmingly in favor of authorizing a work stoppage.<\/p>\n<p>Labor contracts for staff at Temple University Hospital \u2013 the main medical center on North Broad Street \u2013 and the newly-opened Temple Women &amp; Families Hospital in Northwood expire Sept. 30.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/pasnap.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Temple University Hospital Nurses Association and Temple Allied Professionals<\/a> held a strike poll on Friday, and 98% of those who participated selected \u201cyes,\u201d union officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The vote is a necessary procedural step, allowing \u2013 but not requiring \u2013 labor leaders to call for a strike.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlrb.gov\/strikes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Federal law<\/a> mandates unions representing workers at healthcare institutions to provide at least 10 days\u2019 notice before a work stoppage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTemple says federal cuts to Medicaid will devastate its balance sheet,\u201d TUHNA president Marty Harrison said in a statement. \u201cBut they\u2019re spending tens of millions buying out Holy Redeemer\u2019s share of Chestnut Hill Hospital and tens of millions more opening the new Women and Families Hospital, calling them strategic investments in the future of the institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContracts for Temple\u2019s frontline caregivers that prioritize protection and retention are strategic investment number one,\u201d she added. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to be intimidated by a health system more concerned with increasing their footprint than taking care of their frontline staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-198920\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/DSC_0911.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"545\"  \/>Temple University Hospital nurses, techs and health professionals participate in an \u2018information picket\u2019 Wednesday, Sept. 10.JACK TOMCZUK<\/p>\n<p>A Temple Health spokesperson, in a statement, said administrators feel the sides are \u201chaving productive discussions\u201d and are \u201cconfident\u201d that the process will end with a new contract.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs expected, they authorized a strike,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cThis is a part of the normal process \u2013 all unions do this as a common pressure tactic to add leverage to their bargaining position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Union members <a href=\"https:\/\/metrophiladelphia.com\/strike-temple-nurses-demonstrate-safety\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">held \u201cinformational pickets\u201d Sept. 10<\/a> at both hospitals to raise awareness about the issues involved in the negotiations \u2013 chiefly, workplace safety, according to TUHNA and TAP leaders.<\/p>\n<p>An August survey of nurses at Temple main hospital conducted by the union found that two-thirds of respondents reported being the victims of violence on the job and nearly 80% said they do not feel safe.<\/p>\n<p>Administrators are also proposing cuts to benefits that will lead to much higher costs for workers seeking care outside of the Temple Health system, labor organizers said.
