Reese Witherspoon got candid about becoming a young mom<\/a> while married to her first ex-husband, Ryan Phillippe, in the late 1990s.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was so much I didn\u2019t know,\u201d the \u201cMorning Show\u201d star shared on \u201cThe Interview\u201d podcast<\/a> Saturday.<\/p>\n

The actress, who was married to Phillippe from 1999 to 2008, explained that she didn\u2019t realize the sacrifices she would have to make<\/a> in her acting career after giving birth to their daughter, Ava, in 1999.<\/p>\n

On Saturday\u2019s episode of the New York Times\u2019 \u201cThe Interview\u201d podcast, the actress shared that there was a lot she didn\u2019t know. Reese Witherspoon\/Instagram<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd maybe that na\u00efvet\u00e9 was good, because it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019ll just do that and have a career,’\u201d Witherspoon, 49, continued. \u201cAnd I did have a few people say to me, \u2018This is going to be really hard on your career.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cBig Little Lies\u201d star explained there \u201cwere roles [she] couldn\u2019t take,\u201d as she navigated balancing her \u201cfamily and career, being a mom and being a working actress.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why it was also scary when \u2018Legally Blonde\u2019 became such a big hit,\u201d she said, referring to the 2001 Robert Luketic-directed drama. \u201cI wasn\u2019t going to beg for parts; parts were coming to me.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cAnd maybe that na\u00efvet\u00e9 was good, because it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, I\u2019ll just [be a mom] and have a career,’\u201d she said. reesewitherspoon\/Instagram<\/p>\n

Witherspoon claimed it became \u201cscarier\u201d to pick and choose what she would invest her time into.<\/p>\n

The \u201cMan in the Moon\u201d star also shared that fellow celebrities warned her not to \u201cplay a mom\u201d onscreen, saying it would \u201cmake [her] seem old.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I was like, \u2018But, I am a mom,’\u201d she recalled. \u201cThere was so much about our business that desexualized you, so you couldn\u2019t be a movie star if you played a mom.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd thank goodness, that\u2019s sort of going by the wayside. But that was a big part of when I was in my 20s and 30s: \u2018Don\u2019t play a mom. No men will desire you, or nobody will want to go see that movie because nobody wants to see a movie about a mom.’\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the \u201cMorning Show\u201d star saw her career skyrocket after the success of her 2001 film, \u201cLegally Blonde.\u201d WireImage<\/p>\n

The actress shared that her close pal Jennifer Aniston \u201cwas really helpful\u201d in helping navigate her personal life\u00a0and the media early on in her career when they played siblings on the \u201990s sitcom \u201cFriends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Witherspoon recalled the cast, including Aniston, 56, and Courteney Cox, being warm and open to her motherhood journey. <\/p>\n

\u201cI remember I brought my baby, Ava. Ava was only three months old when I was on \u2018Friends\u2019 in 1999,\u201d she remembered.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I remember Courteney and Jen coming to my dressing room and knocking on the door and going, \u2018We heard you have a baby!\u2019 I was like, \u2018I do. I have a baby!\u2019 They were like, \u2018Can we see it? Oh, my God, this is so cool.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Witherspoon claimed the \u201ckindness opened a door for [her] to ask Jennifer a lot of questions when [she] went through breakups or a really public divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cLegally Blonde\u201d star and Phillippe, 51, are the parents to Ava, 26, and son Deacon, 21.<\/p>\n

Witherspoon then married her second ex-husband, Jim Toth, in 2011.
