PlanPhilly reporters want to hear from you! <a href=\"#Section1\">Ask us a question or send us a story idea you think we should cover.<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>At 8:30 a.m. on a sweltering Wednesday morning, Peter House stood at the edge of the intersection where 58th Street, Baltimore Avenue and Cobbs Creek Parkway converge with a tangle of buses, trolleys, crosswalks and fast-moving cars.\n<\/p>\n<p>Just a few weeks earlier, a 50-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/post\/person-killed-being-struck-dump-truck-58th-street-baltimore-avenue-southwest-philadelphia\/16356987\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cyclist was struck and killed<\/a> at the corner by a turning truck.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that hard, if you stand here long enough, to see what the problem is,\u201d House said. \u201cI gotta time it just right. If I walk too early, the cars come. If I wait too long, the light turns again. That\u2019s the biggest challenge for us walking.\u201d\n  <\/p>\n<p>House has lived nearby for years. He says the intersection has always felt risky, and he\u2019s not alone. But the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said safety improvements are on the way \u2014 as part of the first phase of a larger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pa.gov\/agencies\/penndot\/projects-near-you\/district-6-projects\/cobbs-creek-parkway---63rd-street-safety-improvements-phase-1.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cobbs Creek Parkway and 63rd Street corridor project<\/a>, the intersection at 58th and Baltimore is slated for a full traffic signal upgrade.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-706349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2025-06-25-e-lee-betty-willis-peter-house-philadelphia-cobbs-creek-dangerous-intersection-concerned-.jpeg\" alt=\"Peter House speaks with Betty Willis\" width=\"2100\" height=\"1401\"  \/>Cobbs Creek Parkway resident Peter House tells block captain Betty Willis about his experiences living a few doors from the busy intersection. (Emma Lee\/WHYY)\n<\/p>\n<p>For decades, West Philadelphia residents have called for changes at this five-legged intersection. They\u2019ve described it as chaotic, dangerous and deadly \u2014 especially for elderly residents and children walking to nearby schools.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s horrible for senior citizens,\u201d said Palmira Araujo, who lives on South 58th Street. \u201cI\u2019m 93 years old.
