{"id":246530,"date":"2025-09-22T14:45:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T14:45:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/246530\/"},"modified":"2025-09-22T14:45:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T14:45:20","slug":"news-outlets-prepare-fight-against-pentagons-demand-for-press-to-sign-pledge-restricting-reporting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/246530\/","title":{"rendered":"News outlets prepare fight against Pentagon\u2019s demand for press to sign \u2018pledge\u2019 restricting reporting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                Facebook<\/p>\n<p>                Tweet<\/p>\n<p>        <a class=\"social-share_labelled-list__share\" href=\"mailto:?subject=CNN%20content%20share&amp;body=Check%20out%20this%20article%3A%0Ahttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnn.com%2F2025%2F09%2F22%2Fmedia%2Fpentagon-parnell-hegseth-media-access-pledge\" data-type=\"email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" aria-label=\"share with email\" title=\"Share with email\"><\/p>\n<p>                Email<br \/>\n        <\/a><\/p>\n<p>                Link<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5btt009c26qk63m0hjep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Media lawyers and newsroom leaders are evaluating a government memo spelling out new rules that would sharply restrict reporting at the Pentagon.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp00033b6n52q50hv1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several of the country\u2019s biggest news outlets are publicly pushing back on the rules, foreshadowing a potential legal battle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp00043b6ntbb79b1q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis policy operates as a prior restraint on publication, which is considered the most serious of First Amendment violations,\u201d Seth Stern, director of advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp00053b6nr5qcqn8s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The policy leverages the fact that many reporters who cover the US military have press credentials that allow physical access to the Pentagon complex.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp00063b6n7kcqejai@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth\u2019s press office has already booted some news outlets, including CNN, from media workspaces and made key parts of the building off-limits to journalists without an official escort.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp00073b6np3t80sjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, according to the new policy, beat reporters with a Pentagon credential will have to sign a pledge not to obtain or use unauthorized material \u2014 even though, as Stern said, \u201cThe Supreme Court has made clear for decades that journalists are entitled to lawfully obtain and publish government secrets. That is essentially the job description of an investigative journalist.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp00083b6nikayw3bp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the new policy will turn that act into a cause for revoking press credentials.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp00093b6nqv89x5n7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAsking independent journalists to submit to these kinds of restrictions is at stark odds with the constitutional protections of a free press in a democracy,\u201d a spokesperson for The New York Times said in response.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000a3b6nj25x1a3j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Times called the policy \u201cyet another step in a concerning pattern of reducing access to what the U.S. military is undertaking at taxpayer expense.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000b3b6npk3t6qbx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal also issued statements criticizing the policy. And Thomas Evans, the editor-in-chief of NPR, said, \u201cWe\u2019ll be working with other news organizations to push back.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000c3b6nqbsw7eyj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is unclear what form that response will take.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000d3b6nndxzc1ru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the new rules were sent via email to reporters on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PeteHegseth\/status\/1969179306648613129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Hegseth wrote on X<\/a> that members of the media could \u201cwear a badge and follow the rules \u2014 or go home.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/gettyimages-2234546025.jpg\" alt=\"US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon on September 9.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000e3b6n3ilcrshg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the Pentagon press corps \u201calready had to wear credentials and routinely has signed ground rules as needed,\u201d Washington Post reporter Dan Lamothe responded. \u201cWhat the Pentagon press corps has not done before is agreed to a policy that only published pre-approved talking points.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000f3b6nrr47xo34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Numerous Democratic lawmakers decried the new policy over the weekend. One Republican legislator, Don Bacon, also chimed in, saying, \u201cThis is so dumb that I have a hard time believing it is true.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000g3b6nmhfn02mu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bacon, who is leaving Congress next year, wrote on X, \u201cWe don\u2019t want a bunch of Pravda newspapers only touting the Government\u2019s official position. A free press makes our country better. This sounds like more amateur hour.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000h3b6nea6zudm2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When a reporter at the White House tried to ask President Trump about the policy on Sunday, Trump did not seem to be on the same page as Hegseth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000i3b6nmj248vow@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump was asked, \u201cShould the Pentagon be in charge of deciding what reporters can report on?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmfui5htp000j3b6nfen36ts4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNo, I don\u2019t think so,\u201d Trump said. \u201cListen, nothing stops reporters.
