\n\tWhoopi Goldberg kicked off today\u2019s episode of ABC\u2019s The View<\/a> by addressing the elephant in the room: \u201cDid y\u2019all really think we weren\u2019t going to talk about Jimmy Kimmel<\/a>? I mean, have you watched the show over the last 29 seasons? No one silences us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe View drew speculation from viewers and commentators last week when the daytime talker failed to address the suspension<\/a> by ABC of Kimmel\u2019s late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live<\/a>! (Friday\u2019s episode<\/a> was taped on Thursday.)<\/p>\n

\n\tToday, Goldberg explained the show\u2019s decision last week. \u201cWhen the news broke last week about Jimmy Kimmel\u2019s suspension<\/a>, we took a breath to see if Jimmy was going to say anything about it first.\u201d She added that the show took the same approach when news of the upcoming cancellation<\/a> of CBS\u2019 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.<\/p>\n

\n\tGoldberg then slammed the FCC\u2019s apparent role<\/a> in Kimmel\u2019s suspension. \u201cSomeone can say something they shouldn\u2019t and get taken off the air,\u201d she said, \u201cbut the government cannot apply pressure to force someone to be silenced.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGoldberg added: \u201cWe talk about freedom of speech a lot because we are always in somebody\u2019s mess because somebody has decided that we have said something that\u2019s offensive. But we fight for everybody\u2019s right to have freedom of speech because it means my speech is free, it means your speech is free.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCo-host Ana Navarro started her comments on the Kimmel controversy by thanking View viewers for \u201cdemanding truth and courage from us. You deserve it.\u201d She then decried the use of Charlie Kirk to silence debate when Kirk himself was a free speech advocate.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI have to tell you this,\u201d Navarro continued. \u201cI lived through a right-wing dictatorship in Nicaragua and I lived through a left-wing dictatorship in Nicaragua. This is what dictators and authoritarians do. It does not matter the ideology. At first, they come with it for the people with big platforms, at first the silence the press, but then they come for all of us because their intent is to scare us into silence and self-censorship.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tThe View\u2018s conservative voice, Alyssa Farah Griffin, said, \u201cThe First Amendment is the first\u00a0for a reason, because you need to\u00a0be able to hold those in power\u00a0accountable.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing last week\u2019s news of the Kimmel suspension, FCC chairman Brendan Carr said his agency should investigate whether The View is exempt from FCC\u2019s equal opportunity or equal-time rule.<\/p>\n
