San Antonio is Texas\u2019 most dangerous large city, according to a new study<\/a> by financial technology company SmartAsset.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But before anyone contemplates fleeing town as a result , the same study of the nation\u2019s 50 largest cities ranked SA as the nation\u2019s 28th-safest. Meanwhile, Memphis, Tennessee, ranked as the most dangerous. <\/p>\n

SmartAsset analyzed cities\u2019 2023 FBI crime statistics \u2014\u00a0the most recent available \u2014\u00a0along with data from real estate data website Neighborhood Scout, and county health data. Researchers then ranked cities based on statistics such as violent crime, property crime, excessive drinking habits and drug overdoses and traffic deaths per 100,000 people.<\/p>\n

SmartAsset then amalgamated the data to rank cities by how dangerous they are all overall.<\/p>\n

While the Alamo City exceeded its Texas neighbors, it was around the middle of the pack when it came to big cities overall.<\/p>\n

Even so, some have already latched onto the same study to raise concerns about crime in San Antonio. <\/p>\n

During the city council\u2019s budget meeting last week<\/a>, District 10 Councilman Marc Whyte cited the SmartAsset study when trying to justify why San Antonio needed to include hiring more police officers in its $4 billion budget.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cPublic safety is our highest priority,\u201d Whyte said. \u201cAll the other things that we want do not matter if our citizens do not feel safe.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ultimately, council voted down his proposal. <\/p>\n

Fort Worth ranks as Texas\u2019 safest large city in the SmartAsset analysis, coming in at No. 3 nationally. Arlington also ranked among the nation\u2019s safest cities, coming in at No. 7 overall.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\tTexas\u2019 restrictive abortion ban, poor healthcare system and high crime rate all contributed to the state\u2019s low quality of life, according to CNBC, which compiled the ranking.\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n
