PHOENIX \u2014 A Valley man has been taken into custody six years after he allegedly stole his brother\u2019s identity, officials announced Monday.<\/p>\n

Raymond Hernandez was arrested in July by the Phoenix Police Department and stands accused of stealing his brother\u2019s identity after his driver\u2019s license was suspended, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.<\/p>\n

ADOT said that the Office of Inspector General began investigating this case in July 2019, when a driver\u2019s license was flagged for fraud.<\/p>\n

A detective compared the photos on Hernandez\u2019s suspended license and one under his brother\u2019s name and noticed that both photos were of Hernandez.<\/p>\n

The investigation also revealed that Hernandez had three misdemeanor warrants out for his arrest at the time.<\/p>\n

The ADOT detective contacted Hernandez\u2019s brother in August 2019, who confirmed that he did not give Hernandez permission to use his Social Security number or birth certificate.<\/p>\n

Criminal charges were then filed against Hernandez for theft and forgery and the fraudulent driver\u2019s license was suspended.<\/p>\n

However, he failed to respond to subpoenas, which led to a felony warrant being issued for his arrest.<\/p>\n

How was stolen identity suspect located?<\/p>\n

Six years later, on the morning of July 17, Hernandez was pulled over by Phoenix police officers.<\/p>\n

During the traffic stop, officers noticed the warrants and took Hernandez into custody.<\/p>\n

He was booked into jail on the outstanding charges, plus charges of computer tampering.<\/p>\n

\u201cADOT is very pleased to have a successful outcome to this investigation,\u201d Office of Inspector General Lt. Jason Henderson said in a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

ADOT\u2019s Office of Inspector General<\/a> is responsible for investigating claims of fraud against driver\u2019s licenses, ID cards, vehicle registrations, titles and more.<\/p>\n

Anyone who suspects fraud in any of those areas is asked to call ADOT\u2019s fraud hotline at 877-712-2370, email fraud@azdot.gov<\/a> or file a report on ADOT\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n
