Begin with Alexandria Bay<\/strong>, where Boldt Castle perches on a 5-acre island like something from a fantasy novel. Then there\u2019s Aurora<\/strong>, snug on Lake Cayuga, with inns overlooking the water, farm fields at the edge of town and a brewery or two to keep things from getting too boring.<\/p>\n

Beacon<\/strong>, on the Hudson, is the artistic sibling of these storybook escapes. Castles (the haunted, ruinous kind) float on Pollepel Island, while Main Street bustles with galleries, farm-to-table eats and luminous river views. Cold Spring<\/strong>, not far from the city, feels like a wildflower painting come to life: antique storefronts, quiet river walks, and hikes that reward you with panoramas you\u2019ll want to tattoo on your memory. Kingston<\/strong> has the history, the museums and even the riverfront docks for when you want to drift out by boat at day\u2019s end.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s Lake George<\/strong>, a summer dream of boats, mountain backdrops, islands and forested shorelines. New Paltz<\/strong> offers trails, nature preserves\u00a0and stone houses built by Huguenot settlers centuries ago. And of course, the OG health spa, Saratoga Springs<\/strong>, with its mineral waters, ornate architecture, horse racing and the kind of spa vibes that make you forget what your worries were.<\/p>\n

What unites\u00a0these eight towns isn\u2019t just picture-perfect settings (though there\u2019s plenty of that) but a feeling of time slowing down to a more manageable pace. Any of them\u00a0could make for an ideal weekend getaway that requires just a change of clothes, a book and maybe a picnic from a local restaurant.\u00a0These\u00a0towns prove that\u00a0magical places don’t have to be fictional.
