{"id":247618,"date":"2025-09-23T01:02:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T01:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/247618\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T01:02:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T01:02:14","slug":"origins-of-siberias-mysterious-craters-may-lie-deeper-than-we-thought-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/247618\/","title":{"rendered":"Origins of Siberia&#8217;s Mysterious Craters May Lie Deeper Than We Thought : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-have-finally-climbed-to-the-bottom-of-one-of-siberia-s-mysterious-holes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More than a decade<\/a> after mysterious holes were first discovered in the permafrost of Western Siberia, scientists are still putting forward new theories \u2013 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/7-000-huge-gas-bubbles-have-formed-under-siberia-and-could-explode-at-any-moment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gas explosions<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-have-a-new-theory-about-the-colossal-tunguska-event-explosion\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">meteor impacts<\/a> \u2013 on how they are formed.<\/p>\n<p>A team of geoscientists from the University of Oslo, led by Helge Hellevang, has now thrown their hat into the icy ring, putting forth a new model that could explain why these holes formed exclusively on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yamal_Peninsula\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Yamal<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gyda_Peninsula\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gydan<\/a> peninsulas and not in other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/arctic-permafrost-hides-migrating-methane-that-could-skyrocket-emissions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arctic permafrost regions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.24057\/2071-9388-2014-7-4-68-79\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">was discovered<\/a> in Siberia&#8217;s Yamal Peninsula in 2014. It was about 30 meters (98.4 feet) across and more than 50 meters deep, surrounded by ejecta that hinted at explosive origins. These <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-drone-flew-into-siberias-doorway-to-the-underworld-and-the-footage-is-epic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inexplicable holes<\/a> have walls so vertical that you&#8217;d be forgiven for thinking machines had dug them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/mysterious-craters-appearing-in-siberia-might-finally-be-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mysterious Craters Appearing in Siberia Might Finally Be Explained<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hellevang and team agree that a buildup of pressurized methane is the driving force behind these holes, now referred to as gas emission craters (GECs). But while earlier models assumed that features of the permafrost itself were entirely responsible for the holes&#8217; formation, the new study found this unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If permafrost-internal processes, triggered by  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/climate-change\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73046\" data-postid=\"174676\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">climate change<\/a>, were responsible for the eruptions, one would expect that GECs would also form elsewhere in areas of permafrost containing gas hydrates, ground ice, or cryopegs. (Hellevang et al., Sci. of the Total Env., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>Instead, they found that heat and natural gas from deep below the permafrost  \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/7-000-huge-gas-bubbles-have-formed-under-siberia-and-could-explode-at-any-moment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the kind leaking<\/a> from fault systems in the rock far below the Yamal and Gydan peninsula&#8217;s ice \u2013 would be needed to create sufficient force for this subterranean explosion. This makes sense, given that these peninsulas are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/natural-gas\/Location-of-major-gas-fields\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">above one of the world&#8217;s<\/a> largest natural gas reserves.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1-s2.0-S0048969725016821-gr1_lrg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2040\" height=\"1627\" class=\"size-full wp-image-174720\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A) Probability map of Arctic permafrost (modified from Obu et al., 2019); B) seven discovered GECs (yellow circles) and gas\/oil fields at the Yamal and Gydan peninsulas; C) and D) GECs C1 and C2. (Hellevang et al., Sci. of the Total Env., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>They still maintain climate change plays a role: it may be the reason these holes become fully exposed, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/photos-reveal-more-than-200-bright-blue-arctic-lakes-have-started-bubbling-with-methane-gas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growing lakes<\/a> weakening the permafrost and creating a much thinner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-found-the-lid-keeping-the-yellowstone-supervolcano-from-erupting\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;lid&#8217; for gas to burst through<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While this model gives a good explanation for the craters, it still needs to be tested against real-world measurements.
