Welcome to The Logoff:<\/strong> The Trump administration has ended a federal bribery investigation into one of its top immigration officials.<\/p>\n

What happened?<\/strong> Last year, President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cborder czar\u201d Tom Homan was reportedly recorded accepting $50,000 in cash from \u201cbusinessmen\u201d \u2014 undercover FBI agents \u2014 in exchange for promising to help secure government contracts, spurring a Justice Department investigation.<\/p>\n

Homan was a private citizen when he is said to have accepted the cash, but he had boasted about playing a prominent role in a potential second Trump administration in the months leading up to the payment. The investigation was closed earlier this year by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Who is Homan?<\/strong> As border czar, Homan has been one of the public faces of the Trump administration\u2019s aggressive immigration crackdown. He served as acting ICE director in Trump\u2019s first term, and claimed last year that he would \u201crun the biggest deportation operation this country\u2019s ever seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

What has the Trump administration said about the case?<\/strong> The White House denied Homan accepted the money \u2014 despite the reported existence of an audio recording of him doing so \u2014 and described the investigation into Homan as entrapment and \u201canother example of the weaponization of the Biden DOJ.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why does this matter?<\/strong> The Homan story \u2014 thousands in cash delivered clandestinely in a takeout bag \u2014 would be a major scandal in any other era, under any other administration. Here, it\u2019s one data point in a growing body of evidence for the politicization of Trump\u2019s DOJ, including the Friday resignation of US Attorney Erik Siebert<\/a> and a subsequent Truth Social post<\/a> by Trump calling for criminal charges against his political opponents.<\/p>\n
